Nobody knows where the Diclonius Virus comes from. The DNA of a diclonius is somewhat different than a normal human. First of all, diclonii are born with two horns that are shaped like cat-ears. The reason for these horns are unknown (it's been suggested that the horns are natural weapons or some other mutated gene within the DNA of a diclonius). Each Diclonii have extra arms called 'vectors' and vary in number and length. A 'vector' can't be seen by humans cause it moves so fast. A 'vector' can pass through anything, even human flesh. With a simple movement, a Diclonius can rip a human body to shreds, or make the body simply explode from within (or implode from without). Also, diclonii all share a hatred of humans (with few exceptions) and will kill humans in the most graphic way. It only took Lucy, a diclonius, seven short minutes to escape from the research center she was being held at. She slaughted at least two dozen guards and other employees without a trace of remorse. Put simply, diclonius's are almost downright evil and it's very dangerous to be near one. That is, of course, unless the diclonius in question has a split personality.
Lucy is aware when she turns into the child-like alter ego of hers, known as Nyu. Nyu is the polar opposite of Lucy; Nyu doesn't hurt anybody, doesn't even know that she isn't even human...and she doesn't know how to talk much. During the past 6 months living with Kohta, Yuka and Mayu, Nyu has a limited vocabulary and can speak in simple sentences. Nyu doesn't use her vectors at all...and Lucy probably guessed that Nyu doesn't even know she has vectors yet...or how to use 'em. When Nyu emerges on the surface, Lucy is pushed back but is aware....if she wants to be. Most of the time when Lucy turns into her alter ego, Lucy will sleep away the time until Nyu is attacked and takes over once again. Nyu and Lucy are two seperate people trapped in the same body.
Another fact about diclonii are that they're carnivorius and thier favorite food is, of course, humans. Lucy hasn't eaten a human, preferring to rip them in half or rip them down the middle....or simply removing thier heads with a simple flick of her vectors. Lucy is sadistic in the way she kills her victims. Kohta, Yuka and Mayu all know Lucy and her split personality and how to trigger the change; Attack Nyu; Be kind and loving to Lucy and she'll go back to being Nyu, the gentle girl.
"Man, I can't believe I forgot to go to the store today and get some food" moaned Kohta, who was in the dinning room of the inn that he now lived in.
"Nyu?" asked Nyu, who was sitting beside Kotha and acting like her usual self.
"It's too late to go to the store now" said Yuka, Kotha's cousin. "it's already midnight"
"Kohta, I'm hungry" said Nyu in her childish voice.
"I know, Nyu...so am I" said Mayu.
"Well...looks like one of us will have to go to the store" said Kohta, coming to a decision. "I'll go to the store, and you four stay here"
"Nyu!" said Nyu, instantly latching to Kohta's arm.
"Well, I guess you can come along" said Kohta.
"Nyu!!" said Nyu, smiling widely.
"How's come she gets to go with you?!" demanded Yuka.
"Well, you can come if you want" said Kohta.
"Oh, no...I'll be fine right here!" said Yuka moodily and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Yuka?" asked Kohta.
"Just go" huffed Yuka. And that's how Kohta and Nyu came to be alone together.
Lucy lurked somewhere in the back of Nyu's simple mind. Nyu didn't know a thing about Lucy yet...and it's highly doubtful that she ever will. Lucy learned long ago that she could send suggestions to Nyu...like following Kohta to the store. Lucy had been planning to eat Kohta for a month now, and this seemed to be the perfect time in which to devour the young human. Lucy didn't know she could devour a human; it was just insnict that told her that a human would taste great. It was also insnict that told Lucy that she could keep Kohta alive within her stomach if she wanted too...because, despite her hatred towards humans, Lucy wished no harm to come to Kohta, or those who lived with him. The only problem was that Lucy couldn't emerge as her self unless Nyu was attacked (or hit in the head). This simple flaw in Lucy's plan made her angry.
