The crowds in the area were huddled together in front of the podium, looking on at the group of men grinning down at them. They seemed to be awaiting something, anything, yet the allure of what was to happen kept their eyes glued to the podium. The discovery that they promised was to if not change the world, majorly influence it, and those present gave the presenters their undivided attention.
"Heheh, ninjas."
Well, almost everybody.
"Idiot!" Nami shouted at her captain, who dropped the comic he was reading on to the ground. Normally she would be stunned at Luffy actually reading something, even if the subject matter was decidedly a bit immature for her tastes.
"Hey! I was looking at that!" he pouted. "What's the crowd for anyway?"
"You mean you didn't tell him?" a third voice asked. Looking behind them, the pair saw the Straw Hat's resident archeologist looking on at the podium with one eye, the quarreling pair with another.
"Well, I didn't think..."
"I'd get it?" Luffy smirked. "I heard all about it. They said they can make Devil's fruit kinda powers without the fruits."
"How did you..." Nami asked before Luffy grinned, pointing up at the podium.
"...and now ladies and gentlemen, we will begin with the demonstration. To my right are five gentlemen, all with our formula injected into them. If we were lying, and these were just your standard Devil's fruit, only one of these people could create ice. Now?"
What followed caused the crowd to ooh and ahh as multiple men began raising their hands, forming ice blocks and even in one case, an ice sculpture. Nami couldn't even begin to wonder how Luffy did know what he was dealing with. Perhaps "idiot" was too harsh a term. Maybe "childish" would be more accurate to describe her captain.
"And you do realize the implications of such a thing, correct?" Robin asked Luffy. The straw hat wearing boy nodded.
"A lot more guys with cool powers running around," Luffy replied as the head speaker on the poduim continued to boast about his accomplishment, bringing little actual facts forward.
"It's obvious what the World Government will want with this," Robin chimed in. "This is a way of reinforcing their military".
Luffy shrugged off the thought, even as the demonstration continued, the announcer speaking more about the need for protection in the Grand Line than anything. "I don't see any Marines in the crowd."
"Yeah, thank goodness for that," Nami answered. "But that doesn't mean reps aren't here, right Robin?"
The taller woman nodded at her colleagues. "The World Government rarely sends out public endorsement until they know something works. So Marines and the like are not going to be present. A spy though,
just might."
"Anyone look suspicious?" Nami asked, at this point dividing her attention between her friends and a demonstator on stage who could turn his hands into various stone shapes.
"No one I can see," Luffy answered, before another question came to mind. "Say Nami?"
"Hmm?"
"What kind of power would you want?"
The question took the navigator by surprise for a moment, but she quickly laughed it off. "Do you think I need one?"
"It'd be cool!" Luffy shouted, Robin laughing at her captain's admittedly loose standards for such a thing. "I mean, I figure Zoro would want blade hands or something, Sanji might want cooking powers, but what about you? Wind?"
"Yeah, wind," Nami chuckled. "I could send you flying anywhere I wanted. But I like being able to swim."
"What about lasers?"
"That's just dumb. People have guns, if you really wanted to attack from a distance, use those."
Luffy thought the issue over for a second, before offering another suggestion. "Well, what if you were big?"
"Big!?" Nami asked in confusion, her mind seeing several lewd possibilities as to what that meant.
"You know, a giant!" Luffy continued. "You wouldn't have to swim, you could just walk through the ocean! And you could give me rides!" he added while grinning at the possibilities.
"That might work," Nami answered with a giggle. "If you annoyed me, I could just stomp you flat."
"Then again," Nami continued, grinning, "a giant would be able to take
anything she wanted. Gold, jewles, money, men, I bet someone that size
would have a lot uses for a rubber man."
"Food?"
"Well I'd have to," she chuckled, half serious about her captain's seemingly inane question. "And no one would be able to stop me. Ok, Luffy, you sold me on this. Let's steal this stuff. I want that."
"They're not saying how they got the powers," Luffy and Robin replied in unison. Robin was quick to point back to the announcer.
"Our men, given these abilities, will be able to protect ships and cargo from any force that would threaten them, human or otherwise! Now if you'll look here at the payment plans we have..."
With that, having no interest in hiring mercenaries, the three departed. All Nami could say was "Well, so much for that fantasy." The idea of having a toy crew to play with and being able to get anything
she wanted appealed to her immediately, albiet in a bizzare sort of way. And that was to say nothing of a toy rubber man.
"I can imagine that whatever they are using is incredibly well guarded," Robin added.

"Hey, is that shipment ready yet?"
"Yeah, let's go already."
"Didya count the...ah forget it, let's just go."

Heading back towards the Thousand Sunny, Luffy looked on at the ground, less concerned with what he had just seen than what was for lunch. The girls left, presumably to go shopping, and promised to meet back up with him about half an hour from now. Now that he was done, (after clearing out an icebox worth of meat from a local eatery) he wandered back to the ship.
"Hmm?"
His errant stares rewarded him, as on the ground by the docks, seemingly left behind, was a red box, with various trade symbols on it. Luffy instantly recognized the symbol as the one of the company that put on the display. With his curiosity piqued, he looked inside.
"Cookies?"
Sure enough, neatly stacked, seperated from a small booklet, were a stack of cookies. The connection never entered his mind as he looked on at them.
"Hey Luffy!"
Turning around, he noticed the girls returning from their trip.
"Watcha got there?"
"Heheh, ninjas."
Well, almost everybody.
