"Perfect place for a top of the line matter changer don't you think? Nice laboratory, by the ocean so it can have its own hydroelectric plant on the premises?"
"Yeah, but you never mentioned what this thing does."
"It shrinks stuff. Mostly inatimate objects. I heard the few experiments on livestock ended with them having heart attacks. Guess animals like that aren't meant to be small."
"A smuggler's dream come true, in other words."
"Just as long as you're not smuggling cows. Then again, that was only in what, half of them?"
"And it's in a room right on the fourth floor, facing the ocean. Great view up there, huh?"
"Just fine. I've got the harness on, is the boat ready?"
"Just shoot the flare and we'll go."
Turning his attention to the objective of his mission, the thief walked through a rather messy laboratory. Metallic items and papers were scattered all over desks, with the actual device being held inside a steel case.
"These locks are too easy," the thief grinned as he opened it. Smiling, he reached for the prize as another voice arose. "Hey! I've come here to take that! Give it up!"
Right on time, he thought.
"Are you OK? The cops are here already?"
"Not the cops Jigen. Give me a few minutes."
The lights turned on, revealing both adversaries to each other. The man holding the box shaped device was a gangly black haired man in a red jacket, with a look vaguely resembling a simian and a grin that spoke volumes about his confidence. The man on the left, dressed like a ninja, was holding what appeared to be a pistol at his jacketed foe.
"The famous Mouse, I presume? The latest in a long line of thieves, forever taunting the police and the like?"
Mouse took a few steps back. "How did you..."
*WHACK*
"OW"
"Because you stole the story from me, wholesale!" the jacketed man replied as he looked on at his fallen foe, holding his groin. "Only difference is, I didn't make my story up."
"Then you're...ow," Mouse asked as he rose to his feet, finding himself on the end of a Walther P-38 pistol.
"Arsene Lupin III, the latest in a true line of thieves dating to turn of the 20th century France. And beating you to the punch, rat."
"You know," Mouse groaned, "you're not the only member of a line of thieves."
"I didn't say everyone was copying me," Lupin answered as he examined his prize, a box shaped device with a small dish in the top. "Just you."
"So you think."
The next thing Lupin saw as he walked towards the door were three women holding guns at him, each wearing one piece bathing suits as they looked on at their fallen master.
"Mouse-sama!" the red haired girl screamed.
"You'll pay for that!" the blue haired one added.
"Oh dear, I appear to have been caught. I guess this is the part where I give up, right?"
"Right!" Mouse and the girls shouted in unison.
"Well sorry, but not this time!"
The next thing the girls saw was a bright flash of light. The next thing Mouse felt was another violent kick to his groin.
"Later!" a voice shouted. "Say hi to old Pops for me!" The group looked towards the glass window, only to find it shattered, with the device and their quarry escaping on a parasail attached to a speedboat. The visual only sunk in for a few moments before another voice shouted at them.
"LUPIN! YOU'RE SURROUNDED! THERE'S NO WAY OUT OF THIS BUILDING NOT THROUGH US!"
Mouse groaned. He didn't know who gave this interloper the utter...nerve to steal a prize from him, but he wouldn't allow it or him to get away."
"The boats!" Mouse shouted, jumping out the window.
"Hai Goujunishi-sama!

"Oh come on!" Lupin yelled from his perch on the parasail as he held the box shaped device in his hand. "You've been had! Go come up with a new idea! How about a ninja that wants to become a political leader?"
The answer to Lupin's taunts were several bullets from Mouse's speedboat, with his assistants following behind in jetskis of their own. Soon however, both boats pulled away from the jetskis, leaving the pair tailing each other.
"God, why can't you just disappear?" Lupin shouted. Copying his origin story word for word (at least in his mind) was the first strike, going after the same thing he was was the second strike, and not being a good sport about losing, well that just tore it.
An errant bullet quickly interrupted his taunts though, as the machine hummed to life and then in about five seconds went silent again. The only thing Lupin saw was a cloud of steam from a spot in the ocean, with his pursuer nowhere in sight.
"Guess someone up there was listening," Lupin smirked. "Hey Jigen! Goemon! Lower me down!"
From aboard the boat, a man in a trench coat complied, lowering the sail and its occupant onto it. "Where, now where to?"
"About fifty miles south Jigen," Lupin answered. "There's a resort town outside of that government's jurisdiction."
"Any bars?"
"Bars, casinos, the works!"
"Then what are we waiting for?"

Mouse had no idea what occurred. One second he was in hot pursuit of the accusing thief, the next, he had lost track of them completely.
"What did they do?" he sulked. That was when he looked up and saw three enormous shadows descending on his boat, followed by a thunderous voice.
"Gojunishi-sama?"
"Yeah, but you never mentioned what this thing does."
