Maybe this was a bad idea? Kagami had tried to come up with a perfect date for her first time out with Konata as not just friends. She remembered this fancy restaurant that her parents had gone to on their anniversary and it seemed perfect, it was romantic, formal and it involved food, a thing they both loved. But seeing the cosplaying, casually acting Konata strut towards their table, Kagami felt like she was totally out of place in this environment.

“Let me pull out your chair, milady,” Konata said either mocking their posh surroundings or genuinely trying to be romantic, Kagami wasn’t sure. She pulled the chair out a foot from the table, then another couple inches, then another foot, then she slowly edged it back further, turning to Kagami as she did trying to figure out how far to go. Getting the picture, Kagami groaned. “I get it! I’m big! Move away so I can sit down!”

Taking her seat, Kagami’s stomach pushed forwards several more feet, smacking the side of the table so hard it was shoved forward several feet. The loud racket made everyone in the restaurant turn to stare at her, much to the fat girls chagrin. She turned to her date, who was covering her mouth to hide her grin as she failed miserably to keep from laughing. Kagami sighed and dryly said, “Just shut up and sit down.”

Seated apart from each other, Kagami tried to act well mannered as she read the menu while Konata leaned back in her chair, holding her menu up to the light with one hand as she scratched her chubby side with the other hand. After a few minutes their waiter came and Konata nearly cracked up. He was wearing a black butlers suit and had one of those thin moustaches. Konata was fighting down the giggles as she ordered her dinner, finally breaking into full-blown laughter when he was gone. Kagami looked enquiringly at Konata as she banged her fist on the table.

“He looked just like one of those stuffy, British waiters you see in cartoons and anime. So refined and cultured, I bet he drinks his tea with his pinky pointing out. Hey Kagami, bet you I can make him say ‘I never’ before the end of the night.”

“Konata, can’t you behave yourself?” Kagami said in embarrassment as she tried to ignore the stares she was getting. Why couldn’t Konata treat this more seriously, didn’t she understand how important this was to her? She was starting to doubt this whole evening and it had just started. Going out with Konata just felt like a big mistake now.

“Why should I behave myself? I’m out with the one person I want to be with most tonight and I want to have fun, why ruin it by not being myself?” Konata explained with a shrug. Kagami relaxed and slowly she started to smile. She was right. Konata was just acting like herself, she was the one trying to be something she wasn’t for the sake of the date. She wanted to go out with Konata, not some stuffy, impersonal girl that liked to dine at places like this.

Their food came, the waiter giving Konata a disapproving look when he saw her elbows on the table, and they looked at what they ordered. They both ordered some French chicken dish and now that they looked at it, they saw that it was barely a single breast. At that moment, Kagami’s stomach started to rumble. Her hand went to her bulging midsection and she stared dishearteningly at her food. She had been so worried about the date that she had barely eaten anything all day. Regretting her choice of dinning experience, she looked up and saw Konata had lifted up her plate and was tilting it over her upturned face. Her measly meal fell into her open mouth and she swallowed it with barely a second to chew. “Not bad, needed mayo.”

As Konata began to lick her plate clean, literally, instead of getting upset at her incredibly bad manners, Kagami just smiled warmly, finally feeling at peace about this date. They shouldn’t act like other people because they are on a date, thy have to be themselves or let themselves really go to fully enjoy this date. With that in mind, Kagami grabbed her chicken off her plate and shoved it into her mouth, noisily eating it to the disgust of the other restaurant patrons. They could even hear their waiter gasping out in shock.

“I never!”

“Hey, you made him say it. Great job,” Konata said as she stood up and walked over to her date. Taking a blushing Kagami’s hand, she helped her up and smiled at her. “I always wanted my first date to be like an anime, we’d go out to this overly posh restaurant, get unsatisfactory meals and have a classy waiter. There’s only one more thing it needs.”

“What?” Kagami asked, thinking that she couldn’t possibly mean a kiss.

“Dine and Dash!”

Konata dragged Kagami along as she raced out of the restaurant, blowing a raspberry at the waiter as they left. Kagami tried to follow along as fast as she could, but she wasn’t chubby like Konata, she was a blimp. Still they left and Konata led them to another, better place they could eat. When Kagami saw it, she was the one that was dragging Konata along. They raced into the buffet, both ready to put the place out of business.
