The holograms of the popular game Duel Monsters had came out about 5 years ago by Kaiba Corp. The holograms of the various duel monsters are amazingly life-like and look very real. When not attacking other duel monters, the holograms were programmed to act like real people; their eyes blinked, they waved at certain people watching the duel, and they would wait patiently until they were called to attack. This isn't how people dueled back 5,000 years ago; they didn't have holograms back then. Back in those days, real monsters were summoned from the World of Monsters to do battle with each other in the Shadow Games. When the world was nearly destoryed by these Shadow Games, people refused to summon up Monsters anymore to duel each other. 5,000 years later, the game Duel Monsters had came out but people didn't summon real monsters to battle each other; they used cards in the likeness of real monsters.
There are two worlds: the Human World and the World of The Monsters. The World of Monsters is populated by real-life monsters of Duel Monsters. The two worlds were separated by a great barrier that prevented people from entering the World of Monsters and vice versa. The Duel Monsters of the World of Monsters had been working on a plan to enter the human world so they could take part in the game Duel Monsters and have some fun with the humans. 5,000 years ago, when someone lost in a Shadow Game, they would be eaten by the monster that had brought thier life points down to zero. The people that were eaten by the monsters made the monsters stronger than before. Usually, the person who was eaten was digested and turned into fertilizer. Nowadays, the monsters simply wanted to feel people squirm in thier bellies once more. They had discovered over the 5,000 years that they could resurrect people that they had eaten so long ago.
"Just think" said Dark Magician. "we go over to the human world to feast on humans again, but this time we could bring 'em back to life"
The barrier that prevented Monsters from going over to the human world was done by a great magic. So great was the magic, that it took the combined efforts of all the spellcasters in the World of Monsters to break the barrier, allowing them easy access to the human world.
