Nearly a year ago, an explosion rocked the north side of Viridian City in the Kanto Region. Nobody knows what caused the explosion, or who had set it off. Some say that Team Rocket caused the explosion, while other people say that it was caused by a pokemon. Whatever the reason of the explosion, what happened next was shocking and slighty terrifying. People started to shrink down to 5 to 15 inches tall and the shrinking was completely random! A week later after the explosion, half of the citizens of Viridian City were only inches tall. Then,the story of the explosion was explained. It seemed the explosion took place in a top secret research lab located on the north side of Viridian City. This research lab was headed by none other than Giovanni, the Viridian City Gym leader...as well as the leader of Team Rocket. Giovanni's people didn't cause the explosion--according to the police--but was caused by a single bomb located near the heart of the research center. What exactly they were doing in the lab was unknown, because Giovanni disappeared before anyone could ask him that question. All that was known is that a purplish cloud was seen briefly after the explosion had happened, and it was this cloud that caused people to shrink down randomly. The "shrinking cloud" -- as it was called, moved from city to city in the Kanto Region. One month later, half the population of Kanto had been shrunk, and the "shrinking cloud" moved towards the Hoenn Region as well.
The cloud didn't shrink everybody that came into contact with it, including Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town. Then, six months later, something was happening. Several people that didn't shrink before started to shrink down in size. It seemed the "shrinking cloud" was still in the air in Kanto. Normal-sized people begin to look upon the shrunken people as sub-human..and the normal-sized people begun to feast on the shrunken people! A cure of the "shrinking cloud" couldn't be found, so the shrunken people were doomed of becoming a snack for all the normal-sized people! However, some normal-sized people didn't see shrunken people as sub-human and unworthy to live...which included Ash Ketchum and Misty and several other people in Kanto.
Now it's nearly a year after the shrinking cloud did its work. Ash Ketchum is still normal-sized and lives in his house in Pallet. A month ago, Delia Ketchum had shrank while she went to get some groceries from the store and never returned home, leaving Ash to conclude that someone must've eaten her. Ash had been heart-broken over the loss of his mom, but his mom wouldn't want Ash to feel that way.
