Just a Normal Evening at the Cat Cafe

“Dude looks like a lady!” anyone recognize that classic Aerosmith lyric? Well in the case of Ranma Saotome, it’s actually true. You could say Ranma is half a man, but that wouldn’t be right since when he gets splashed with cold water, he completely stops being a man and becomes an incredibly hot and busty red haired pigtailed girl, all thanks to his dad dragging him to the middle of nowhere in China to train. One wrong step and the two of them plummeted down into some cursed springs below them, and Ranma’s curse was that he would remain a girl unless he gets splashed with hot water. That would turn him back into a guy, but another cold splash and the whole thing would start all over again. Still, this had to be better than the curse his dad got stuck with; he turns into a panda.
Believe it or not though, that’s not where the weird stuff ends. Ranma’s whole world can get pretty bizarre, especially since he found that when he was a baby, his dad promised his good friend, Soun Tendo, that his son would wed one of his daughters, Kasumi, Nabiki, or Akane. The first was the sweet and polite matron of the house, just like her late mother. The middle girl was loyal to the family, but also greedy and money-grubbing, so watch out. Finally, Akane was tough, tomboyish, but alos quite cute and somehow managed to tolerate Ranma…sometimes. Upon meeting them, and all of the kids learned the truth first hand, they even wound up moving into the Tendo household, despite the fact that no one had any intentions on marrying anyone. Although, if you asked Akane’s sisters, they’d say that it was looking like her and Ranma would be hearing wedding bells pretty soon.
On top of that, it turned out there were girls that actually wanted Ranma to be their husband, whether his dad had promised them that long ago or not. Take for example, Shampoo(yes that is her real name), a Chinese Amazon who if you asked, would tell you that Ranma was her fiancée. Despite being an Amazon though, she’s really no taller than any typical girl and really looks normal save for her purple hair. She doesn’t speak perfect English, but she does it well enough and has the cutest voice. Don’t let the innocent look fool you though, Shampoo can be quite the devious girl sometimes as well.
“Ni Hao everyone!” take right now for instance. Even as she greeted everyone with a cute smile and a friendly wave, a diabolical plot raced through her head. All the Tendos and Saotome’s were accounted for, but even as they greeted her back, two in particular refused to step into the restaurant.
“Boy, stop being childish and get in here!” Genma, Ranma’s dad, was not amused by his son’s behavior, but decided that if he was going to act like a kid, he might as well treat him like one. Gaining a death grip on his ear, Ranma was forced to move along with his father “OW! Cut it out! Okay I’m going, ow!” Soon afterwards, Soun gave his youngest daughter the same treatment “Come on Akane.” The equally skilled martial arts master took his daughter by the arm and dragged her kicking and screaming all the way in “No, stop, you can’t make me!”
“Honestly, we get a free meal and this how you two behave? What is wrong with you?” Genma asked both of them. At that point, Ranma and Akane broke free of the grips of their dads, but instead of running, tried to get through their thick skulls, even if they were only interested in the free food and not how their kids actually felt.
“How about the fact that we’re being served by the same girl whose caused me nothing but grief every time she’s around me.” Akane stated. For whatever reason, Shampoo honestly believed that she was a rival for Ranma’s love. What could she possibly see in that macho and arrogant jerk? Let him marry Shampoo, see if she cared.
“I’m with Akane, Shampoo’s gotta be up to something,” Ranma concurred. It seemed like every other week, Shampoo had cooked up some new scheme to get Ranma to date her and ultimately marry her. For crying out loud, her Great Grandmother always referred to him as her son in law every time she saw him. This dinner had to be just another excuse for her to make another move on him, and they both stated “And I’m not going to stick around to find out.”
“Look at those two, like an old married couple.” Nabiki shook her head and smiled. Saying the exact same thing at the exact same time, she could easily see the wedding rings that would soon be on their fingers. Her older and much nicer sister, Kasumi, also smiled and added “They’re so adorable, aren’t they?”
Both Ranma and Akane froze with very awkward expressions on their faces. They knew that they’d never go together, but also couldn’t deny what had just happened. The tension could be cut with a knife and it only got thicker ever as Shampoo went unnoticed by everyone as she scowled at the ‘couple’. She could kick Akane in the face right now; how dare she share such a funny and cute moment with HER fiancée? Still, a deep breath, and Shampoo remained focused on her plan. As soon as Ranma stepped into the restaurant, he was already hers.
“Okay everyone,” seeing their adorable host clasp her hands together like that brought everybody to take their seats. Ranma leaned back in his chair and gave Shampoo a suspicious look, asking her straight “So what’s this all about Shampoo?”
“Shampoo put new noodle dish on menu and want all of you to be first tasters.” She smiled back. She told her love the truth, leaving out just the little detail about the food that would make this night perfect. Kasumi and Nabiki liked the sound of that, and their dad and Genma were already drooling, while Akane mumbled that she had lost her appetite. Shampoo informed them “Food will be ready soon. Be right back.” And headed back into the kitchen.
“Oh well, I guess this could be worse.” Ever the smug guy, Ranma decided to count his blessings that he was likely going to eat something delicious, while also cracking one eye open and looking at one girl in particular “We could be eating Akane’s cooking.” The blue haired disaster in the kitchen was naturally offended, but even more so when everyone else chuckled and agreed with him.
“Remember sis, there’s a difference between well done, and burnt.” After gawking over her own dad laughing at her like that, Akane also had to put up with Nabiki brining up that incident with the chicken. So she forgot to taste it before she served it, they didn’t have to make such a big deal about it!
“Akane, you have learned how to tell white wine and vinegar apart, right?” Kasumi added, but immediately covered her mouth, shocked and appalled that she had said something so rude. The damage was done though as everyone cracked up from the sweet matron’s remark.
“Hey, remember when she tried taking a crack at pizza, and thought sardines and chili peppers would be great toppings?” Ranma nearly fell out of his chair after bringing that one up, and his dad was banging his fist on the table while actually tearing up from laughter. Akane’s cheeks glowed crimson as she just wished they would all die right now. She had gotten that last one from an actual recipe and they should be grateful that not only did she feed them but that she left whipped cream.
