“Rei? What’re you doing here?” Asuka asked. She felt sorry for anybody who would willingly come to this dump, herself included, but she certainly wasn’t expecting Rei. It’s not like they had any homework to do or anything. As odd as her being here seemed, what was even more bizarre was the look on her face; she was smiling. It was only a small one, but emotion from The First Child was as noteworthy as an Eclipse, and just as rare.
“I wanted to speak with you. Can I come in?” she asked politely. Still left with a question mark over her head, Asuka just went “Uhhh, okay,” and let her pass by her. As the door was closed, Rei made sure that they were all alone. “Is Misato home?” she asked, and Asuka responded “No, she left at like eleven last night, said she was going out for drinks.” Rei checked her watching after hearing that “It’s 2PM.” Asuka just rolled her eyes “I know. I just hope she gets her hangover out the way somewhere else before she gets back. We just had the carpet cleaned.”
“I see, and Shinji isn’t home either, right?” Rei wanted to clarify, which got the typical bitchy response from the redhead in the room “Yeah, I don’t know where that little cry baby is. Personally, I’m hoping he doesn’t come back. Misato may be a drunk, but at least she pays for the food.” Hearing that turned Rei’s smile into a scowl, and while her associate rambled about being sick of instant food almost as much as she was of Shinji, Rei spoke “Asuka!”
The room suddenly became deathly silent as Asuka turned to her. She had never heard Rei raise her voice, and as she looked at her like that, Asuka now had zero idea of what was happening right now. Softening her look a bit, Rei tried to keep herself calm to say what she wanted to say “I wanted to talk to you about Shinji.”
“Shinji?” Asuka responded, not believing she could be anymore confused than she was right now. This whatever it was about that little wimp? Well, if talking about this got this weirdo out of the house, then she figured she might as well go along with this “What about him?”
“Well, it’s about the way you mistreat him. The name calling, always putting him down, you treat him like dirt despite the many times he has helped us keep the Angels at bay, and you need to stop all of this, right now.” She didn’t show it, but Rei was getting such a thrill as she spoke in this way to Asuka. She was starting to sound like how a mom would sound, and when her baby boy saw that she had put his bully in her place, he would be so happy, perhaps happy enough to give his mommy a big kiss. If that thought didn’t put Rei in a good mood, nothing would.
“Are you serious?” unfortunately, the tone of Asuka’s voice and that bitchy smile on her face indicated that this wasn’t going as easily Rei had hoped. Her maternal side told her a good talking to would work, ignoring another part of her that was thinking of more drastic measures, measures that Rei knew would frighten Shinji if he found out, and the last thing she wanted was to scare her son. She tried to remember that as Asuka kept talking.
“Look, Wonder Girl, you need to wake up. Shinji is a wimp!” there it was again, the nagging urge to come at this girl with everything she had and rip her apart for even suggesting anything bad about her Shinji, and yet Rei still tried to keep calm, saying “He’s just sensitive.” Asuka however wasn’t buying it “Yeah well sensitive isn’t what we need to be pilots. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how they could put such a wuss behind the controls of an EVA. I mean, it makes no sense. He’s always moping around, he blames himself for every little thing that goes wrong, he cries if you look at him wrong, Gott im Himmel! He’s so damn annoying.”
“That’s enough!!!” Rei slammed her foot her down, once more silencing the second child, and telling right then and there “I won’t have you talking about my Shinji like that!”
“You’re Shinji? What….wait a minute,” suddenly, Rei found herself freezing. She had let the truth slip before she even told Shinji, at least, that’s what she thought, before Asuka’s eyes widened and she said “Oh my god, you like him?!!” Rei felt her cheeks heat up, but as she got the look of determination back, Asuka had returned to trying to wrap her head around being surrounded by so many things that just didn’t add up, unable to even look at Rei right now “Oh my god! This is hilarious! The perfect little doll wants the world’s biggest baby to get into her panties! You know, I’d be laughing if I wasn’t already so happy that you’re finally showing your true colors. Now with both of you losers out in the open, it’s going to be pretty damn obvious who’s the best EVA pilot around.”
That was the last straw, and everything became clear right then; Rei had been trying to handle this how a normal mother or even a normal girlfriend would handle this situation, even ignoring the desire and abilities she possessed to make Asuka sorry in every horrible way imaginable. However, she wasn’t human, but she wasn’t completely an angel either. She wanted to be Shinji’s mother, but also wanted to love him in every other way. She wanted to approach this from the middle ground as well, and unfortunately for Asuka, that path still ended with her dead. Rei didn’t care what she thought about her, but Asuka wasn’t going to change her mind about Shinji or stop harming him and even stated that her Shinji was not worth anyone’s time. Rei knew she was doing the right thing now.
