On the western coast of Nippon, (better known to foreigners of a later time as Japan) a shrine was located, its structure buried deep within a cave by the beach. No one knows who created the shrine, or why it pointed west. Some claimed a tribe of devil-priests, exiled from a far away civilization, constructed it in secret. Others claimed a more supernatural force was responsible, and similar shrines existed across the rest of the world, both known and unknown.
The demonic entity known as Naraku didn't care about its origin, only what it housed. Within the shrine rested four statues that demon gods used to communicate with the outside world. These spirits, which referred to themselves as the Ancient Spirits of Evil (most likely in Naraku's opinion, a translation to avoid having to use unpronounceable names from wherever they originated) possessed incredible power, and claimed dominion over evil not just in Japan, but in the entire world, even beyond this planet.
Therefore, Naraku knew, as he entered the shrine, past the long hallway into the main room, that these spirits had been watching him. He had come here seeking power once before, and received two shards of the Shikon Jewel for his trouble, in return for promising the spirits that he would conquer Nippon for evil. Now he returned again, needing to ask for even more power. In front of a bubbling pool, filled with odd purple liquid, the four statues surrounded him, their demonic heads twisted so as not to resemble any regular animal, he prepared to make his request.
Naraku, the voices began as if to confirm his worst fears, for many years, we have watched your pathetic struggles to rid Nippon of the forces of good, a priestess and miserable half demon. And year after year you have failed. And now, you have managed to even lose your allies in evil, along with those you created from your body.
"Worthless idiots!" Naraku shouted to the voices. "They deserved death for their failure."
SILENCE! YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN NOW NARAKU. AND WE, THE ANCIENT SPIRITS OF EVIL, GIVE YOU AN ULTIMATUM. YOU HAVE ONE WEEK'S TIME TO DEFEAT THE ONE KNOWN AS INU-YASHA AND THE PRIESTESS KAGOME, OR ELSE YOU FACE PERMANENT EXILE FROM NIPPON!
"Exile?!" Naraku asked. "I have tried, but I need a weapon to equalize myself against Tessiag..."
THAT WORTHLESS DEMON FANG IS BUT A CHILDREN'S TOY IN COMPARISON TO TRUE SWORDS OF POWER. BEHOLD!
From out of the depths of the pool, a blade emerged. Or rather, a sword hilt with two blades, one on each side emerged, close enough for Naraku to pick up.
THIS IS THE SWORD OF PLUNDARR, A WEAPON FROM A FARAWAY WORLD, AND MORE THAN A MATCH FOR THE WORTHLESS DEMON FANG THAT TROUBLES YOU SO.
"It appears magnificent," Naraku replied, "but if I am to defeat those that would oppose me, I need more power. I need true power."
THEN WE SHALL OFFER YOU POWER. ACCEPT OUR ULTIMATUM, AND WE WILL GIVE YOU THE POWER OF OUR CHAMPION, THE EVER-LIVING. THIS POWER SHALL BE YOURS TO WIELD AGAINST YOUR ENEMIES, TO FULFILL YOUR TASK.
"And if I refuse?" Naraku asked, curious as to the reply.
THEN NO CREATURE OF EVIL SHALL EVER AID YOU AGAIN. EVER. ALL DEMONS SHALL CONSIDER YOU THEIR ENEMY.
He had to ask. The Ancient Spirits of Evil possessed power over all evil beings, demonic or otherwise. To refuse their ultimatum would be to effectively cut his own limbs off, preventing his vision of conquering Nippon from ever coming to fruition. The Shikon Jewel would be useless without their aid as well, he assumed.
"Very well, I accept."
THEN RECITE THE INCANTATION OF POWER, AND WE SHALL GIVE YOU THE POWER OF THE EVER-LIVING. THEN ACT QUICKLY, OR FACE EXILE.
From beneath his jackal cloak, Naraku smiled faintly.
"Ancient spirits of evil," he began. "Transform this decayed, mortal form into Naraku, the ever-living!"
The pool of liquid boiled as green energy emerged from the statues, striking Naraku, energizing the demon with their power. His eyes turned a dark red and his body seemed to darken in color as it grew a foot. The cloak that covered his body flowed behind him as a cape, revealing his body, which now had the images of snakes all over the front of his body.
"Grant me the power of all your vast cosmic influence," Naraku commanded, and with that, red lightning struck him. Laughing, he flew from the shrine, sword in hand, ready to strike down any who opposed him.
REMEMBER NARAKU, ONE WEEK, AND THEN YOU ARE NOTHING AGAIN, DOOMED TO SPEND ETERNITY IN EXILE.
