The same feeling that had enveloped you the day prior began to come about again. A tingling sense of unease, as you lay on your side trying to fall back asleep. Gradually, it seemed the mattress was firmer than it had been before, and the bedsheets heavier. Opening one eye and then the other, you look around at your surroundings. Nothing was out of place, however once again everything felt larger than it had been. After a minute or so, the feeling stopped. Relief washes over, as this last episode had ended and you weren’t microscopic. Relief, soon turning to dread as you realized you were significantly smaller than you had been. Whereas before you stood about to your mother’s waist, maybe three feet, now you were certainly only a foot if not smaller. Sitting up on the mattress, now offputtingly firm under your tiny weight, you push the massive bedsheets away. It takes a noticeable effort to escape the thin sheet, which increases the sense of alarm in you, however it is the distance from the edge of the bed that catches you off guard. When you had gone to sleep, it might have been five steps to reach the edge of the bed. Counting your steps, you conclude now at just under twenty.
Staring off at the vast space before you, you come to greatly appreciate your parents for choosing a low-to-the-floor bedframe. You grab a handful of the fitted sheet below you and begin to awkwardly lower yourself down the mattress. Coming to rest along the wooden edge of the bedframe you find that you’re maybe an inch or two shorter than the mattress, and so maybe just over a foot in total. Being taller than a foot comes with some relief to you, even if that relief felt pathetic in hindsight. The ornate wooden bedframe provides ample space to hold as you descend to the carpet below, which now comes up to your ankles.
Just as you were beginning to walk away from the bed toward the bedroom door, you pick up a rhythmic thudding from the floor. You freeze as the bedroom door shoots open, the thudding turning nearly into booming as your mother strides into the room.
“Peter honey, Jessica’s gone off to school…” She trails off, scanning the bed as she got closer. By then you’d turned and ran as fast as you could manage to the space under the bedframe. Just as you flung yourself beneath the bed, a thunderous bang sounds as your mother turns the corner, coming to a stop at the side of the bed just where you had been moments prior. You stared at the two colossal pink slippers, each colossal now in a way you’d never conceived of before. As you were laying on your stomach to fit under the bedframe, you had to look up to see where the titanic pale calves rose from the tops of the slippers. Considering that in the not-so-distant future you really would be small enough to be shorter than your mother’s feet, you nearly became sick.
“Peter? Peter where are you?” First one slipper disappeared above you, then the other as your mom quickly checked that she hadn’t stepped on her son. You sit for a moment and consider your options.
