Barbara Gordon jerked out of her sleep. It had been a spasm of pure fear that had awakened her. No doubt something happened to her in the dream she had been having. She only had a dim memory about eating at a restaurant that was a strange hybrid of the Batcave along with, of all places, a McDonald's which was especially odd since Barbara hadn't eaten at a McDonald's for close to a decade. She had been talking to....someone. Someone with spiky black hair and piercing eyes. She tried to recall more of the dream but was interrupted by the loud buzzing of an alarm that indicated that there was an intruder in the manor above.
Barbara climbed out of the cot she had been sleeping on and promptly tripped over her cape in her rush to see who the intruder was. It took her a moment to collect herself before moving into the main area of the Batcave.
The Batcave consisted of one large cavern that was nearly the length of two football fields and several smaller caverns that almost counted as separate chambers by themselves. The cots that were in the Batcave -- there were four in total -- were notoriously hard to sleep on, nothing like the beds that Wayne Manor had. Barbara had arrived at the manor after a lengthy patrol and entered the Batcave. She had been intending to go up to the manor to sleep in her own room but she hadn't made it that far; it was a miracle she hadn't dropped dead due to exhaustion as soon as she had climbed off of the motorcycle.
Barbara went to the computer and typed a few buttons. Barbara narrowed her eyes as she saw the security footage of the manor to find that nobody was in the manor after all. Barbara typed a few more buttons to discover that there was apparently no error. The
alarm had indeed been tripped but nobody was in the manor. Barbara spent several long moments trying to figure out just who (or what) had triggered the alarm. During the search for the apparent nonexistent intruder Barbara saw that Alfred had fallen asleep in the drawing room in front of the TV. It was what was on the TV that caused Barbara to forget all about what had made the intruder alarm to go off.
The television was tuned to the local news channel. The news program was showing amateur video of a giant woman stomping around Gotham. A giant woman wasn't exactly unheard of. At first glance Barbara figured it had to be Giganta that was stomping around causing a rampage but that definitely wasn't the case this time. The amateur video didn't show the face of the gigantic woman; it showed only the legs. The amateur video was soon cut off to be replaced by a helicopter shot that showed the identity of the giant. Barbara nearly choked when she saw who the gigantic woman was.
"Harley Quinn?!" Barbara nearly shouted. It was Harley alright but she looked radically different and it wasn't just the royal attire she was wearing. Harley was completely ignoring the helicopter that was trying in vain to reach her.
The helicopter shot was soon replaced by a shot of the moon, revealing the smiley face on its surface. Barbara could hardly believe what she was seeing.
The shot of the moon was replaced by the two newscasters who were reporting on the footage of Harley. Barbara couldn't hear what the newscasters were saying due to the security camera having no sound.
It was around this time when Barbara wondered where Bruce was. The last time she heard from Bruce he was patrolling the financial district.
Barbara sat back in the chair and became lost in thought. Barbara would have stayed in that state when she noticed the channel on the TV switched to a Disney movie. At first Barbara couldn't identify which movie. It was apparently a movie about sentient toys; A GI Joe and a female doll with blond hair. With the Disney Channel logo at a corner of the screen Barbara assumed it was a Disney movie. But wait......why would Bruce, of all people, would have the Disney Channel?
It took Barbara a couple minutes to realize that Alfred had a friend on the couch he had fallen asleep on. Thanks to the angle of the security camera Barbara couldn't see the identity of who was sitting next to Alfred. All that she could really tell was whoever it was they were wearing a Batman costume similar to a Halloween costume.
Barbara sat up from the chair. She walked over to the long winding staircase that led up to the manor. The staircase leaded to the sizable library in the manor hidden behind a bookshelf. She walked into the library....and found herself walking into the drawing room which wasn't anywhere near the library. In fact, the drawing room and the library weren't on the same floor.
"You humans have thought of wonderful things to put in these movies" came a voice coming from the couch while Barbara looked around in total confusion as to how she came into the drawing room. The couch was faced away from the open door so Barbara couldn't see who was talking.
The voice from the couch continued, "I mean sentient toys. I mean, okay, it's not that original. There have been many a tale about inanimate objects coming to life....I have been known to do just that. But I suppose talking movies isn't on your mind, Miss Gordon"
Not only Barbara was dressed in her superhero attire but there was no way anyone sitting on the couch would see her without turning around.
"How do you know who I Am?" asked Barbara walking into the room proper. She rounded the couch to see what appeared to be a kid in a Batman costume. Instead of the bat symbol there was a lightning bolt on the outfit. The kid looked maybe twelve years old. The kid was eating popcorn out of a bucket not unlike the ones in theaters.
"I know everything about Batman" said the kid glancing at Barbara. The eyes were a little too big for Barbara's liking. Definitely too big to belong to a human. As Barbara had a better look. at....whatever this kid was...his legs were way too short along with the arms. The kid-gnome thing smiled as he ate more popcorn. "after all, I am his number one fan"
"Okay, you're clearly not human" was all Barbara could say. "what -- "
"So rude!" snapped the gnome. "I do have a name you know.....your tongue can't possibly pronounce it but you can call me Bat-Mite"
"How did you get in here?"
Bat-Mite frowned. "Hasn't Batman mention me to you?"
Barbara shook her head no.
"I'm from the fifth dimension" said Bat-Mite. "I haven't visited this universe for quite a while. I think......seven? no, no....eleven years. Oh, you know nothing about the fifth dimension? It's where godlike imps like me exist"
"Fifth dimension....?" asked Barbara.
"I drop in from time to time to see Batman in action" said Bat-Mite. "where is he, by the way? Oh, nevermind" here, Bat-Mite snapped his fingers and Bruce popped into existence right by the couch on the other side. Bruce looked around until his eyes fell on Bat-Mite and Alfred and, finally, to Barbara. Naturally, he was in his costume.
"Bruce!" said Barbara without thinking. But then, this Bat-Mite was supposedly godlike so wouldn't he know the identity of his favorite hero? "um, so...where were you?"
"Can't really saw I'm all that pleased to see you, Bat-Mite" said Bruce.
"Oh, how can say that after all the fun times we've had together?" asked Bat-Mite.
"I wouldn't exactly describe the times we had were....fun" replied Bruce.
"Oh, you wouldn't know fun if it bit you in the cape" said Bat-Mite waving a hand dismissively. "but, please, tell us what happened to you today"
Bruce proceeded to explain what happened and his encounter with Harley.
"So, that's his play this time...." mumbled Bat-Mite.
"This time?" asked Barbara. Bat-Mite didn't answer but looking like he was doing some serious thinking. Barbara shot a look over at Bruce while Bruce had his eye on the diminutive copy of himself.
All of a sudden an actual lightbulb appeared over Bat-Mite's head and, after a moment, it turned on lighting up the entire room.
"Since Mxy gave his powers to a mortal," said Bat-Mite slowly. "I'll give my powers to a mortal as well"
