In the end, he'd feel more guilty and ashamed if there was not a single person who knew what happened to Jennifer other than him. It pained him, but he had no courage or strength to tell anyone, much less reveal himself with his condition.
Sophia's words rang in his ears though. She was willing to continue to support him. Would she support him after the fact when she knew the truth about Jennifer? He grew hopeful.
Taking a deep breath, he told her the truth. What really happened to Jennifer...and how he failed to find a solution. Sophia listened on with shock and wide eyes. Of course, as James went on, he grew emotional. He could feel his body slipping a little, but when he was done, he breathed and looked to his neighbor.
He was surprised when she suddenly grabbed him and hugged him. It was unthinkable. Why was she hugging someone who murdered her girlfriend?
"That...can't be your fault, James. You couldn't have known!"
James quivered, shaking his head. "That doesn't mean anything. I was unable to bring her back."
Sophia let go and placed her hands over James' thigh. Her eyes showed less fear now and more understanding. "You were able to bring me back though."
James furrowed his eyebrows and frowned. "It doesn't make a difference though. Jennifer is gone."
Sophia smiled sadly and shook her head. "While Jennifer is gone, at least you didn't give up. If you did, I may have been gone too."
James couldn't understand any of it. He couldn't understand why Sophia was still with him. Getting up from the couch, he put a hand to his head and sighed.
"I need to go home."
Sophia's face fell, but remained a little hopeful. "Why don't you stay over, tonight?"
James stared at his busty latino neighbor like she was crazy. "You can't be serious. Why would you want me to stay over?"
Sophia got up from the couch and made her way over the nearest phone. James started to pale as he realized what she was planning. Before she dialed what could only be his mother, she glanced at James.
"You need someone who can comfort you. I'm not going to let you go home knowing you'll sulk," she answered.
James mouth open in disbelief. This was crazy. Before he could protest, Sophia already dialed his mother immediately asking if James could spend the night.
