“Before you slam the door in my face I need to tell you something. I’m sorry for what I said back there, I was out of line.”
Paula paused, taken off guard by the apology from a woman that had treated her like scum for years. She tried to tell if the old hippy was telling the truth and saw nothing but honest guilt on her face. With her hand on her chubby hip, Paula asked, “You yanking my chain?”
“No, no, I’m being sincere. I am sorry and not just about what I said, I’m sorry for everything.” Angie said while smiling uncertainly at the other woman. After she grabbed her antacid, Angie got thinking about what she’d said to Paula. She hated the woman for how she talked down to her son and acted so irresponsible. It bothered her so much because she loved James like he was her own son and would never treat him that way. Then she realized that she was about to swallow the boy, not exactly a very motherly thing to do. She got to think about how hard it is to look after someone with such a strange ability, the accidents that must happen, and the hardships of raising him alone. She had never really put herself in Paula’s shoes, never thought about how it could be much worse for James if his mother really abused his abilities. It occurred to her that while not a great mom, Paula was not doing so badly by herself.
“It can’t be easy being a single mother and I should have seen that, but I was too blind. You’re a good mother Paula.”
Paula was genuinely touched, most people thought she was an awful mother because of her drinking and neglect, but she did try. Inside of her, James screamed as he listened through the layers of skin and fat, begging Angie to mention the pill was missing, to ask his mom and get him out of her. Sadly, she had rushed over as soon as she came to her realization, not checking if James was still there. As far as she knew, he was still waiting by the couch to be swallowed.
“Thank you, that means a lot coming from you. I guess I’ve been kind of a bitch to you as well. I just see my son always going to your house and I get jealous that he’d much rather spend time with you then me.”
“Tell you what, next time the both of you can come over,” Angie said, warmly looking at Paula. It felt so good to make peace with James’s mother. Somehow it even made her back pain fade a little. It looked like she wouldn’t need to take James for her pain anymore; she had better go back and tell him to transform back. “Are we good, Paula?”
“Better then good.” Paula surprised Angie by opening up her arms and pulling her into a hug. Their bellies pressed together and James screamed as he smacked against the walls of the stomach. Slowly he slid down the creased, slimy walls, his body further breaking down until barely any of him was left. He could feel his mind fading as more of him was melted down and absorbed into the stomach, the gurgling of the belly fading as he slowly passed on to wherever pills go when they are digested. He didn’t want to die in his mom’s belly, alone in this dark, disgusting place surrounded by his mom’s echoing voice.
Breaking the hug, the women looked at each other, a tentative friendship forming between them as the boy they both loved digested in one of them. Angie moved to leave, but something was nagging Paula. “Hey wait! There’s something I want to tell you.”
Angie turned and Paula paused when she saw how happy the other woman looked. She wanted to come clean about stealing the pill, but didn’t want to potentially ruin this new friendship. It was better she kept this to herself, Angie never had to know she had stolen one stupid pill.
“Lets get a drink some time. I know this great place nearby.”
“Okay, but I can’t promise that I’ll be able to keep up with you. I don’t think I can drink like you do.”
“No one can,” Paula said with a wide smirk and started to laugh. Her bellowing laughing was the last thing James ever heard. Her stomach began violently shaking with her laugher, tossing him around from one side to the other. He broke apart, dissolving fast into nothing. He cried as he vanished away, wishing he had been smarter or learned to change back under stressful situations. Now it was too late.
Paula and Angie ended up having that drink, after James funeral. Angie never found him in her home and assumed he had left while she was talking to his mom. When he never returned to his mom the police were called, but they found nothing. Paula was devastated, but thanks to her friendship with Angie she recovered enough to keep on living. She never told Angie she took her pill. Although she did make an offhanded comment to her that she should up the dosage of her medication. That pain pill she took had no effect on her; it was a complete waste taking it.
