In the General’s world, spies that were the private property of their masters were called “private agents”. These were incredibly useful to powerful people who wanted personal loyalists as opposed to public servants. And thumbelinos—wild men from other dimensions miniaturized from a inch to a foot but generally to the size of an average woman’s thumb—were poor fighters but excellent spies.
A spymaster could play many games with her private agents.
A short game involved teleporting them in and out of enemy territory to investigate nooks and crannies.
A medium game involved gifting them to people for a spy operation meant to fight the recipient.
A long game was more subtle—the goal was not to fight but to use the spy as an agent of influence over the recipient.
