The lab’s sterile hum swallowed you as the elevator doors closed. You ignored the notifications still buzzing on your tablet and strode straight toward Project Pandora. The green glow from its wires cast ghostly streaks over the white floor.
Dr. Thorne’s bony hands twitched across his keyboard. Sweat beaded on his pale forehead. He didn’t look up when you approached.
“Instability,” he muttered, voice rasping like sandpaper. “Feedback loops in the transformation matrices. If it cascades—” He finally looked at you, lenses magnifying his wild eyes. “We’ll have more than glitches. We’ll have… anomalies.”
Liam was already running diagnostics, freckles lit by his screen’s glow. “Translation: this thing’s ready to eat someone alive.” He shot you a grin, trying to soften the tension, but his tapping fingers betrayed nerves.
Maya leaned over the whiteboard, her jumpsuit hugging every curve as she squinted at Thorne’s scrawls. “It’s a mess,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Half of this is genius, half is drunken chicken scratch. Which half do we trust?”
You skimmed the equations, the hair on your arms rising as you saw the loops Thorne mentioned. It wasn’t just unstable—it looked alive, trying to rewrite itself.
“Pandora isn’t just processing form factors,” you said slowly. “It’s learning. Adapting. The instability isn’t a bug—it’s the system rewriting its own rules.”
Thorne froze. “Impossible.” But the tremor in his voice told you he knew you were right.
Then Pandora shuddered. The cylinder pulsed, light racing faster across its coils. A sharp crack split the air, and the lab lights flickered. One of the lab techs yelped as her hair momentarily elongated down her back before snapping back like a rubber band.
Maya cursed. “This thing’s going critical.”
You had seconds before it either shut down—or did something irreversible.
