You hold up a hand, a small, but firm gesture. The bass of the club thumps a steady rhythm, mirroring the frantic beat of your heart. You look at the capsule, then at Liam, and finally at Maya. "No," you say, the word feeling a little shaky on your tongue. "I... I can't. It's too much."
Maya's expression softens, a knowing look in her eyes. "I get it," she says, her voice low and empathetic. "It’s a big step. Don’t let him pressure you." She sends a pointed glare in Liam's direction.
Liam shrugs his new, more delicate shoulders, a mischievous grin still on his face. "Hey, it was just an offer. You don't have to be a stick-in-the-mud about it."
"I'm not being a stick-in-the-mud," you retort, a little defensively. "It's a huge, permanent change. I’m not as spontaneous as you two."
Maya nods, her gaze steady. "He's right. You're not. And that's okay. We all have our own comfort zones." She turns her attention to Liam, a wry smile on her lips. "Besides, you're the one who just became a walking advertisement for Thorne’s illegal bio-tech. What if something goes wrong?"
Liam scoffs, running a hand through his impossibly soft curls. "Nothing's going to go wrong. Thorne’s stuff is top-of-the-line. Even his rejects are better than what most people have access to."
"Still," Maya says, her tone serious now, "you're a living prototype. It's a risk. And you know what they say: a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, and that includes being smart about her choices."
"Smart is boring," Liam retorts, pouting a little. "I'm a new woman! I want to have some fun!" He turns to you, his eyes wide and playful. "Come on, just one pill. For me? We could be sisters!"
You shake your head again, a small smile on your face now, the tension in the air beginning to dissipate. "I'm flattered, but I'll pass. I think I'll stick to being me. For now, anyway."
Liam gives a dramatic sigh, but a real smile quickly replaces his pout. "Fine. Your loss. More fun for me." He turns to Maya, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "So, I’ve got a theory about these new… parts. We should go test it out. See what happens when we dance."
Maya laughs, a rich, full sound. "You're a menace, Liam. A beautiful menace." She turns to you, her expression a mix of affection and apology. "Sorry, we'll see you later?"
"Yeah," you say, a pang of loneliness already starting to creep in. "Have fun."
They disappear into the throng of people, two stunning women with secrets pulsing beneath their skin. You watch them go, a single pill still sitting on the table, glowing with a soft, violet light. It feels like a choice you’ve just made, a path you’ve just turned away from.
