The two disgruntled parents ignored the hostile crowd in front of the and took the long way around. It took a while, but eventually they were able to pick back up the trail of destruction their daughter had left in her wake.
As the pair drove and followed the trail of smashed earth, crush cars, and damaged buildings, they couldn't help but think about the events that transpired the night previous or the life Diana had been forced to live.
Demi could only see that sad face Diana had before she left. All she could see in her daughter's eyes was betrayal and heartbreak. She trusted them with her life and in return they didn't trust her enough to tell her the truth sooner. If they had, maybe their family wouldn't be as fractured as it was now.
Daniel meanwhile could only think of the life he's forced his daughter to lead because of his stupid mistake. She wore rages essentially, couldn't have nice shoes during the winter, couldn't go to school like normal kids, and was ridiculed and belittled every day. It was a damn miracle that she hadn't snapped or given up on life. Now he wasn't so sure.
As these thoughts plagued the desperate couple, the trail soon lead them to outside the city. They were surprised the trial lead them this far, how far had Diana gone? How much had they truly hurt her that the trail left the city and entered the woods.
"She went out this far?" Demi whispered. The poor woman wanted to cry, this only confirmed her suspicions. Her little girl really was trying to run away. What if... No! No! She wouldn't think like this, she couldn't.
Daniel wasn't doing much better. Her tightened his grip on the steering wheel and turned off the dirt road and into the forest. Gone were the damaged city streets that were now replaced by broken trees, crushed foliage, and footprints.
Danny thought back to when Diana was younger and they'd taken her to the doctor. She was much too large for a girl her age and the doctor had chalk up her condition to a rare kind of gigantism. Even then that was odd as her X-rays didn't say anything was wrong. If only he'd known back then.
If only he'd known...
The sad father turned around a big tree until finally a large cave came into view. The cave itself didn't grab their attention so much as the person sitting in it. "Is that...?"
"It is!" Demi cut in. "Speed up Danny!"
He didn't need to be told twice as he put the pedal to the metal. The car's engine roared to life as it steamrolled the already damaged foliage. From what they could tell the figure was indeed Diana, sitting down with her back turned.
The car eventually came to a dead stop and Daniel couldn't help but honk the horn. "Diana!?" he called out the window.
No answer...
He tried again. "Diana!?"
Still no response...
Demi looked worried and Daniel mirrored her. "You stay here, I'll go out and talk to her."
"What?"
"I'm the onw who caused this, so I'm the one who needs to make it right." Daniel explained.
"Are you sure that's wise? What if she's mad at you? I lied too but, maybe I should go out there first and smooth things over?"
"I don't know." Daniel said unsure. He'd been so obsessed with finding Diana that he never actually thought about if she was angry at him. Demi lied too, but she wasn't the cause of the damage. Maybe she should go first?
