The Remote of Transformation

Ethan’s hand flew to his face, fingers smacking against soft skin that didn’t feel like his. His jawline was gone, his chin smaller, his cheeks smooth as glass.
“What the…” The voice that came out wasn’t his. Higher, lighter, edged with a rasp that made his stomach lurch. He whipped his head toward the black screen of his monitor.
A girl stared back at him.
Black hair, shiny and straight, fell just below her shoulders, framing wide brown eyes. The face was heart-shaped, lips plump with a hint of pink gloss. He blinked once. Twice. The girl did too.
“Holy crap…” His hands shot down his torso, tracing over a tight white tank top stretched across a pair of modest but firm breasts—B-cups, maybe. His fingers cupped them automatically, and the shock of sensation made his breath stick. “Oh… oh, hell no.”
He spun to the mirror hanging on the back of his door, stumbling because his center of gravity was all wrong. His hips swayed. His thighs rubbed together. He slapped the wall to steady himself, heart trying to jump out of his chest.
The girl in the mirror was Madison Reed. Madison freaking Reed. Short, toned legs that probably made every skirt look amazing, that perky cheerleader ass he’d definitely noticed during pep rallies.
“This isn’t happening,” he muttered, voice quivering. “No way. No freaking way.”
He turned sideways, staring at the new curve of his body, the dark hair falling into his face. His fingers pinched at his waist, slid to his hips, then lower—where his body had completely changed. His breath hitched.
“Okay. Okay, stop. Just… undo this. Reverse button. Something.” He stumbled toward the Morphisizer, every step strange and too light. His legs were shorter. His arms thinner. He felt like a stranger inside his own skin.
He reached for the machine, but his hand froze when he caught his reflection again. Madison’s brown eyes looked back at him, wide and panicked. He was her. Exactly her. Not a cheap mask or some janky scan.
A knock slammed against his door.
“Ethan, dinner’s ready!”
His stomach plunged.
“Ethan?” She knocked again.
“Uh—yeah!” The voice was wrong, completely wrong. Feminine, familiar, the voice he’d heard cheering on the sidelines.
A pause.
“Who’s in there?” His mom’s tone sharpened. “Ethan?”
Oh god. She didn’t recognize him. Of course she didn’t. Why would she? He sounded like Madison Reed, and from the mirror, he was Madison Reed.
“Uh, just me! I’m… uh… on the phone!” He tried to deepen the voice but it sounded ridiculous.
“What phone? You don’t have friends to talk to that long.” The door handle rattled.
“Don’t come in!” He leapt at the door, pressing his small body against it, heart pounding. The height difference was weird—he didn’t even reach the same spot his head usually did on the doorframe.
Silence. Then a sigh. “Fine. You’ve got ten minutes before I come back up. Don’t make me—”
Her footsteps faded.
Ethan’s shoulders slumped. He slid down the door, Madison’s black hair falling over his face.
“Okay,” he whispered. “You’re her. You’re literally Madison Reed. Fix it. Don’t freak out. Just…”
His eyes landed on the Morphisizer. The machine’s screen blinked a dull green, the words TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE glowing like a cruel joke.
