The sun was a red smear on the horizon, the sky a palette of tired purples and bruised oranges. Jay had been driving for hours, the rhythmic bounce of the semi-truck and the constant, maddening jiggle of his new breasts a singular, exhausting torment. He couldn’t go on. The fatigue was a lead blanket, and the sheer, unadulterated shame of his situation was a physical weight. He pulled off at a rest area, the truck’s massive engine groaning to a halt.
He sat in the driver's seat for a long moment, the silence broken only by the hum of the air conditioning. The thought of sleeping in the truck's sleeper cab was a new kind of hell. It had always been a tight fit for his old body, with his broad shoulders and expanding gut. But even with the flaring of his hips and the mountainous, jiggling reality of his chest, he fit in without a problem. He'd clearly lost a few inches.
He unbuckled the seatbelt, and the blessed relief of its removal was a jolt. He climbed over the center console, a new and awkward maneuver that made him feel like a teenager again, all clumsy limbs and uncoordinated movements. He slipped back into the sleeper cab, and the first thing he noticed was the smell. It was his smell, a mix of stale coffee, diesel fuel, and old sweat. But it didn't belong to this body.
He lay down on the thin mattress, the Lucite heels digging into the fabric. He took them off and tossed them into the corner of the cab, a small act of rebellion. The tiny bikini bottom and top were still all he was wearing. The fabric was tight, constricting, and a constant, uncomfortable presence. He tried to get comfortable, but his new breasts were a problem. They were too large to lie flat, and they pressed against each other, a soft, fleshy weight that was both alien and deeply unsettling. He tried to turn on his side, but the weight of them shifted, a grotesque, jiggling mass that made his stomach lurch.
He finally gave up and lay on his back, his new arms folded behind his head. He stared at the ceiling of the cab, the peeling paint and faded stickers from his old trips a cruel joke. His old life was so close, yet so far away. He was a prisoner in his own home, a man in a cage of woman's flesh. He wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come. He was just tired, so incredibly tired.
He reached for his phone, a small comfort in a world of torment. He unlocked it and stared at his own face, his old, tired face, a ghost in the machine. He scrolled through the photos, and an idea began to form in his mind. He opened the camera and, with a shudder, turned the lens on himself. He took a picture of his new face, the heart-shaped face with the freckles and the striking green eyes. And then, unable to resist, he pulled back one of the cups of his bikini and took a picture of his half-exposed chest, the brown nipple and the monumental globe it was attached to a shocking, almost obscene sight on his phone's screen.
He closed the camera app and opened a search engine. He typed in a query: "reverse image search." He uploaded the picture of his face. The search results were instantaneous and overwhelming. A dozen different social media profiles, all belonging to the same woman: “Kendra Rose.”
Jay clicked on her Instagram account. It was a world he didn't know, a world of beautiful selfies, photoshoots in exotic locations, and carefully curated images of a perfect life. Her bio read: "Model, influencer, lover of all things chic. For business inquiries, DM me!" The photos were endless, a relentless stream of pictures of his new body. No doubt about it--that's the face he saw in the mirror and in the camera app of his phone. There was a photo of her in a bikini, a somehow even more revealing one than the one he was currently wearing, a photo of her in a designer dress, a photo of her laughing with friends at a fancy restaurant.
The last post was from yesterday afternoon, a picture of her in a café, a perfect cappuccino in front of her. The comments were all praise, all adoration. He scrolled down, a knot of dread tightening in his gut. She was an Instagram model, a woman who made a living by being beautiful. By being desired.
He looked at the last post again, the date and time stamp a cruel joke. He had been a man at that time. He had been in his truck, driving down a long, lonely highway. Now, he was her. He was Kendra Rose.
So was she him now?
He went to the message button and, with shaky fingers, typed a message. "Kendra, my name is Jay Robinson. I think we swapped bodies. I'm a man. I'm in your body right now. I'm in a semi-truck. I have no idea what's going on. Please, please reply. My life is a mess. I need to get back to my family."
He sent the message and then sat there, staring at the screen, waiting for a reply that never came. He checked her profile again. Her account hadn't been active since yesterday. He was alone. Utterly, completely alone. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep, the soft, fleshy weight of his new breasts and the terrifying reality of his new life a constant, oppressive weight.
