It started as a whisper.

Two giggling women with six-inch heels and artificial tails tittered behind their hands, then drifted away, looking suddenly serious. A shirtless man in a mesh speedo tapped furiously at his Swapp bracelet, swore under his breath, and marched off toward the spa deck.

Damien noticed the shift like a cold draft in a warm room. The buzz of the party hadn’t dimmed—if anything, it had grown louder—but there was a new edge in the air. Nervous laughter. Impromptu huddles. A sudden spike in drink orders.

He cornered a sweaty man who was staring at his arm console like it had insulted him.

“Hey,” Damien said, putting on Mira’s breathy drawl. “What’s going on?”

The man wiped his brow. “Server glitch or some bullshit. Swapp’s cloud is down for Solstice Shores. Can’t log out, can’t port. Everyone’s stuck in their sleeves until tech support fixes it.”

Damien blinked. “Stuck… how long?”

“They’re saying a few hours.” He looked Damien up and down. “Though I can't imagine you're in a rush to get out of yours.”

Damien fake-laughed, then turned away, heart thudding. Shit. Shit.

He tapped his own wrist—no menu, no options. Just a gentle pulse: System unavailable. Estimated resolution: TBD.

Judging from the mood shift around the party, other people were realizing the same thing.

One woman started crying, shouting at a staffer that she had a job interview in the morning. A couple was arguing—well, more like the man was arguing and the woman was laughing and shouting “TOO LATE TO SWITCH BACK, BITCH!” at him.

Damien, still uneasily swaying in his new heels, turned just in time to watch a panicked young woman—tall, lithe, stuffed into a busty sorority co-ed’s spring break sleeve—slam her hands against the bar.

“I was only supposed to be in this for two hours! I have court tomorrow—court!

The hotel bartender kept his sympathetic smile.

“I understand, Miss—er, Mr. Fredrickson. Unfortunately, a regional network crash has affected Swapp reversion protocols. You’ll remain in your current sleeve until the error is resolved.”

“And how long is that?!”

The bartender’s smile didn’t move. “Estimates vary between six hours and thirty-two.”

THIRTY-TWO HOURS?!

Gasps rippled through the party. Word spread like spilled champagne: no one could switch back. Everyone was locked into whatever hyper-customized fantasy sleeve they’d chosen, even the absurd ones.

And some of them were… thrilled.

A pair of bodies had already started grinding on a couch in the open. A gender-fluid influencer livestreamed a heartfelt monologue about “being forced to sit with your new self.”

Arjun looked delighted. “This,” she cooed, raising her glass, “is exactly the kind of immersion we need. Real growth only comes when there’s no escape hatch.”

Damien backed away, clutching his drink. His heart was pounding. This wasn’t a wrinkle—this was an opportunity.

No one knew who anyone else really was. Everyone was trapped in bodies they couldn’t ditch. The blackout could make people careless. Loose tongues. Desperate conversations.

He needed to find those conversations—and fast.

He drifted into the lounge area where half the room was already mid-anxiety spiral, others were leaning hard into the chaos: someone was openly getting fingered under a silk blanket. A woman with exaggerated, cartoonish breasts was doing keg stands from a champagne fountain.

In the corner, Damien spotted an older guest—elegant, draped in a sheer gown, clearly someone important—whispering something to her date. Her voice was low, but drunk. Sloppy.

Damien inched closer and caught it: “The merger only happened because I swapped in as Beatrice and seduced the whole damn board. The NDA doesn’t cover what happens in this sleeve, right?”

He froze.

That was a huge name.

And she had just admitted to corporate espionage. While trapped in someone else's tits.

Damien looked down at his own tight little body. Then back at her.
