Julie and Carol stared down at you in shock, their faces frozen with a mixture of disbelief and curiosity. The plate you had landed on was cold and hard, a stark contrast to the wet, humid environment of Julie's mouth. The smell of mustard and sausage still clung to you, mixing with the metallic scent of the plate.
Julie leaned in closer, her green eyes narrowing as she examined you. "I can't believe it," she murmured. "You were telling the truth."
Carol, her dark hair framing her face, bent down for a closer look. "Is this for real? He's so tiny."
You struggled to your feet, your legs shaking from the ordeal. "I told you," you said, your voice hoarse and weak. "I was swallowed, and I had to climb out."
Julie straightened up, a look of guilt crossing her face. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know." She glanced around the restaurant, lowering her voice. "We need to get you back to your coworker. She must be worried sick."
Carol nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we can't leave him like this. Let's get him to the lifeguard station."
Julie gently picked you up, her fingers surprisingly delicate given their size. She cradled you in her palm, the warmth of her skin a comforting change from the cold plate. The world shifted and swayed as she stood up, and you clung to her fingers for stability.
The walk through the restaurant was a dizzying experience. The sounds of clinking glasses, the hum of conversation, and the occasional burst of laughter created a cacophony of noise. You saw glimpses of other diners, their faces blurred and massive from your perspective. The smell of various foods wafted through the air, making your stomach churn.
Julie and Carol exited the restaurant and headed back to the pool area. The bright sunlight was blinding after the dim interior, and you squinted against the glare. Julie's footsteps were steady and rhythmic, the motion soothing after the chaos of the past few minutes.
As they approached the pool, you spotted your coworker, Juli, scanning the area with a worried expression. Her relief was palpable when she saw you in Julie's hand. She rushed over, her face a mixture of concern and anger.
"What happened?" she demanded, her eyes darting between you and Julie.
"It's a long story," you said, trying to sound calm. "But I'm okay now. Julie and Carol are helping me."
Julie handed you over to Juli, her expression apologetic. "I didn't realize he was so small. I accidentally swallowed him while eating. I'm really sorry."
Juli cradled you gently, her face softening. "I'm just glad you're safe." She turned to Julie and Carol. "Thank you for bringing him back. This could have ended a lot worse."
Carol smiled, though her eyes still held a trace of shock. "No problem. It was the least we could do."
Juli carried you back to the lifeguard station, her grip firm but gentle. "We need to figure out a way to keep you safe," she said softly. "This can't happen again."
You nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over you. "I agree. We'll need to come up with a plan."
Back at the station, Juli set you down on a soft towel, and you finally had a moment to catch your breath. The familiar surroundings and the sound of water lapping at the pool's edge were comforting. You looked up at Juli, grateful for her presence.
"Thank you," you said, your voice steady. "For everything."
She smiled, a look of determination in her eyes. "We'll get through this. Together."
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the pool, you knew that while the day's events had been harrowing, you had friends who cared about you. And with their help, you could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
