Mario knelt on the warm, vast expanse of the elfs palm, looking up into eyes that held the stillness of a deep lake. Her hair was a startling, brilliant white, cascading around her like frozen waterfalls.
"Mrs. White haired Elf, please let me go," Mario cried out, his voice thin and trembling. He looked up at her with a pitiful expression, hoping to appeal to whatever sense of mercy a giant might have. "It isn’t right to keep a living being as a pet or a tool. Please, I just want to go home."
The elf tilted her head, watching his tiny movements with a detached sort of wonder. A slight, calm smile touched her lips, though it offered no comfort to Mario.
"No, little one," she replied, her voice smooth and melodic. "You are far too rare to let go. It has been a long time since I’ve encountered a creature of your kind."
Before Mario could beg again, a shadow loomed over him. A massive glass vial descended with terrifying speed. He tried to bolt, but the glass walls slammed down around him, trapping him against the soft surface of her hand. With one swift, practiced motion, she sealed the container and lifted it toward her face.
Mario pressed his hands against the cold, curved walls of his new prison. He was hoisted into the air as the elf opened a large leather briefcase.
"I suppose since we will be spending quite a bit of time together, I should introduce myself," she said, her large eyes peering through the glass at him. "I am Frieren. Try not to worry; I simply want to study you for a while."
She placed the vial securely inside the dark briefcase. Mario barely had time to react before the heavy leather lid swung shut, plunging him into darkness as the muffled sound of her footsteps began to rhythmically shake his small, transparent world.
