Before you could speak up to continue telling any stories, the melodic jingle of the doorbell ran out throughout the house. Sophie bobbed along to the fifteen second tune, and Kimberly stood up and dutifully went to check the door. You looked at your fiancée and raised an eyebrow, wondering who it was. Her clueless expression let you know that she hadn’t been expecting any visitors either.
From the other room, you could just barely hear Kimberly say, “Why, Irina! Isn’t this a surprise! And you’ve brought Selena and Persephone!”
Those names meant nothing to you, but the Smalls sisters immediately stood up and smiled. Sophie beamed. “Oh my gosh, the Briarwoods! Eee! Persephone’s such a cutie too!” She rushed off giggling towards the front door and out of sight.
Maddie rolled her eyes. “It’s only been a week since we last saw them.” She called after Sophie, and trailed along out of the room. Cassie was the last to go, turning to spare you a quick glance.
“The Briarwood family are our next-door neighbors." Cassie said. "Our families hang out all the time. Miss Briarwood, Irina, is mom’s best friend. Let me go say ‘hi’ really quick.”
You nodded. “Sure thing babe.” Winking at you, Cassie strolled out of view, leaving you alone on the table. Or at least, alone for two seconds, before Sophie tore back into the room at full tilt. Sparing you a quick grin, she ran to the couch, retrieved the cell phone she’d apparently left behind, and sprinted back out of the room.
However, on her way out, Sophie’s foot kicked the corner of the table you were on, creating a mini earthquake. Unprepared, you stumbled forward and fell off the edge, falling to the carpet two feet below. Your face impacted on the ground, slightly mushing your head, and you weakly looked up in time to see Sophie disappear around the corner, oblivious to her blunder.
Sighing, you made a mental note to be careful around her in the future. Though obviously a nice, caring, and happy girl, she’d demonstrated more than one airheaded and ditzy tendency in the short time you’d known her. Picking yourself up off the floor, you dusted off your shirt and pants, and only looked back up when you heard footsteps drawing nearer.
A tall, lean girl slowly meandered into the room, looking around aimlessly. Her pitch-black hair fell down her back and in front of her face like a curtain, shrouding her features with a veil-like quality. Past her long locks, you could just make out two blue eyes highlighted by black eyeliner, a cute nose, and plush lips coated in black lipstick. The girl’s skin was such a pale white color it almost looked porcelain.
Fitting her hair and choice of makeup, the girl’s outfit was almost entirely black, with white and purple highlights. She was wearing a loose-fitting t-shirt torn away in the middle to show off some midriff, and tight black leggings. She was certainly less well-endowed than someone like Cassie (or even her entire family), but the girl’s smaller breasts cute butt, and long legs were nothing to scoff at either. She looked to be eighteen or nineteen.
As she drew near, you noted two things. Firstly, you noticed she hadn’t taken off her shoes yet, though calling them shoes was hardly appropriate. The girl’s towering black boots went past her calves, and were quite eye-catching. Of course, part of the reason they were eye-catching was due to the second thing you noted: the girl kept looking at the paintings on the wall, and the TV, but never at the ground.
Foolishly, you realized this a second too late, and as soon as you opened your mouth to call up to her, the girl took another step, the black boot of her left foot hovering over your body. Your cry died in your throat, and the girl stepped down, burying you under her boot and squashing your body into a pancake, accordion style.
She wasn’t inattentive enough not to feel that though, and the girl quickly stepped off of you. Peering down at you from behind her sheet of hair hanging in her face, the girl spotted your squashed facial features. Even though she had no idea what you were, she knew she’d stepped on something she shouldn’t have. The girl drew back into herself, biting her lip in an outrageously adorable expression of guilt.
It took you thirty seconds or so, but your miraculous body unfolded from its crushed state and reformed back into 3D. Once more you dusted yourself off, and then looked at the girl. Her eyes were wide with wonder, and she actually brushed aside the hair in front of her face to get a better look at you. You gave her a friendly wave, and opened your mouth to introduce yourself.
“Hello, I’m–” Was all you got out, before a high-pitched voice squealed in delight.
“AH! What a cute dolly!” The childish voice cried, and your attention snapped to another newcomer.
At the entrance to the living room was a much shorter and younger girl, though she still obviously dwarfed you. Her bright features exuded childlike innocence and naivety, from her bright brown eyes to her black hair styled into wavy ringlets and hung around her shoulders. She was wearing a simple little girl’s dress that flowed around her as she walked, white fabric with red floral roses printed on. She couldn’t have been older than seven.
Momentarily confused what the little girl was talking about, you were taken aback as she rushed forward and scooped you up into her arms, her strength surprising compared to her petite frame. You struggled in her arms, but she only gripped you tighter, her squeezing embrace squishing your limbs flat slowly. The little girl held your head against her shoulder like a baby and spun in circles.
You caught the eye of the older girl, and her face was panic stricken. She looked at you intently, appearing almost afraid of the sudden change in her introduction to you. Closing in on herself, she seemed to be trying to say something to the little girl, but couldn’t find the words.
Thankfully, your knight in shining jean shorts arrived, as Cassie rushed into the room and knelt to the little girl’s level.
Cassie put on a friendly smile, though her eyes kept darting to you. “Uh, hey there Persephone. Remember me?”
The little girl, Persephone, nodded happily. “Yep yep! You went to school, right? I go to school too!”
Cassie patted Persephone’s head, eliciting a happy giggle. “That’s right. I went to big kid school, but now I’m back. And, that dolly you’re holding is actually mine. Can I have it back?”
Persephone’s smile vanished instantly, and her hold on you tightened even further. A strangled gasp escaped your lips. The tiny giantess shook her head. “But I like him. He’s squishy.”
“Uh, yeah, he is.” Cassie agreed, voice growing more stern. “But, Persephone, he’s not your dolly. He’s mine.”
Persephone was resolute. “But mommy says big kids like Selena don’t have dollies. You said you went to big kid school.”
Cassie’s eyes widened, and she swore softly under her breath. Her patience lessened. “Yes, Persephone, but my dolly is…uh…for a friend. It’s a present for a special friend.”
Persephone titled in head in contemplation, and then her eyes lit up like the night sky. Nodding over and over, she relinquished her grip on you and handed you to Cassie. You were a bit crumpled up, so Cassie shot you a fast glance of sympathy before setting you down on the couch behind her. The tall girl, who you now assumed to be Selena, also caught your eye, and her eyes conveyed a relieved sense of happiness.
Cassie thanked Persephone for handing you over, but was totally unaware of the truly horrific conclusions the seven-year-old was jumping to in her mind. Having rationalized that Cassie didn’t need a dolly since she was a big kid, and figuring that Cassie knew how much Persephone liked playing with you, the little girl had decided that SHE must be the special friend Cassie had mentioned, and the you must be a present for her. As such, she’d had no problem handing you over, figuring Cassie would just give you to her later.
