“Oh, here’s an idea!” Kimberly finally announced. Even from your position on the bathroom counter, she towered over you, and there was something foreboding about the otherwise contented smile on her face. Swallowing your fear, you prompted her to go on.
“Uh…what’s your i-idea…Miss Smalls?” You meekly inquired.
“Something simple.” She explained. “I’m a forgiving person Jake, and I want to like you, for sure. You just need to earn my trust a bit more. Prove you can handle yourself and help others.”
“…go on.”
“So, how about a bit of shopping? We passed by a rather impressive gift shop earlier. I’d love an Atlantic souvenir!” Kimberly crossed her arms. “If you can go get one for me, I’ll consider everything ‘made up’. I’ll even provide the money, you’ll just be my delivery boy.”
You brightened instantly. “Is that it? I can absolutely do that!”
“Great. That’s what I like to hear, Jake. Oh, and the bigger souvenir the better. Impress me.” Kimberly added at the last second. She fought down a growing smirk as your enthusiasm dimmed a bit. She knew full well how much trouble it’d be to lug a massive souvenir to her at your stature, but this test wouldn’t be fun without some challenge.
Still, you agreed. “Okay, I’ll get on that right away Miss Smalls! You can count on me!”
Smiling, Kimberly lifted you off of the counter and carried you out of the women’s restroom. Setting you on the floor, she dug a crisp fifty bill from her purse and handed it to you. As it was too big to even fit into your pocket, you folded it in half and held it closely to your chest.
“Alright,” Kimberly pointed down the hall. “Walk to the far end, take a left, and then a right. You can’t miss it.” She turned the opposite direction. “I’ll be down this hallway, a short right, and then up some stairs. If I’m in the middle of a massage when you return, wait patiently.” She looked you directly in the eye and lessened her smile. “If you AREN’T there when I’m done with the massage, I will be incredibly disappointed in you.”
You gulped, and managed a confident grin. “Don’t worry about a thing! I might even be back before your massage starts!”
Kimberly’s eyebrows raised, indicated your response had impressed her. Without another word, she turned on her heels and walked away. Taking one more second to psyche yourself up, you dashed full tilt down the hallway, following the directions Kimberly had dictated to you. Gift shop, here you came!
Years of living at your height had done wonders for your endurance and stamina, so the sprint down the hallway was nothing to you, even considering the lengths you had to go. What was less easy to deal with were the constant obstacles thrust into your path. What had looked like a straight and clear hallway became anything but in minutes.
A maid pushing her cleaning cart ran over your feet, which delayed you a few seconds. While you were pinned down, a groggy woman desperate for her morning coffee stumbled out of her room and decimated you beneath her fuzzy slippers. It took two minutes to peel off of the floor and keep running.
Near the end of the first hallway, a group of teenage girls rounded the corner ahead of you, rushing to the breakfast buffet before it closed. Either looking at their phones or each other, the girls remained oblivious of you, and in your haste to run, you were out of breath and unable to shout at them as they approached.
You slipped past the first girl, only for the second to kick you in the stomach. Falling back into the path of the first girl, her designer stilettos stabbed down onto your face, causing you to cry out in pain. Sadly, your cries were deafened by their incessant giggling and gossiping. The other five girls trod on you in turn, a barrage of sneakers and heels ripping pieces of your clothes to shreds. Amazingly, the fifty-dollar bill remained unscathed.
Entering the home stretch, you dodged another two girls on their way to the dining hall, but collided with a third woman’s suitcase while you were distracted. Momentarily stunned, your squished face stuck to the suitcase as the woman rolled it inside her room. Scrambling like crazy, you popped your head free and rushed between her legs back into the hallway right as she closed her suite’s door.
The gift shop was now before you, and the coast was seemingly clear. Grinning with a sense of victory, you dashed across the lobby and into the gift shop. True to Kimberly’s word, it was surprisingly big, with shelf after shelf stuff with knickknacks and clothing branded with Atlantica’s logo. Several unique displays were set up, with brand new items for sale.
You had no idea what Kimberly would like as a souvenir, so you scanned the aisles until something caught your eye. Near the back of the store was a sizable stuffed bear plushie, easily three feet tall. The bear was adorably designed and coated in soft, fuzzy fur. It had on an Atlantica hat and shirt. You just barely remembered Cassie telling you that Kimberly once owned a stuff bear as a kid that she cherished. Miss Smalls would HAVE to be impressed by both a large souvenir and one with a personal connection.
Strutting over to the display, you noticed for the first time that you weren’t alone in the gift shop. A woman was pacing around the sides of the store, staring at items on the shelf before marking something on a small clipboard she was carrying. You also noticed a nametag on a lanyard hanging from her neck, and realized she was Atlantica staff, and most likely the gift shop’s attendant.
She had platinum blonde hair worn straight down her back, cut off at about her shoulder blades. What little of her skin was showing was pale and smooth, and you caught a glimmer of blue eyes behind her cute glasses. She was dressed in typical employee attire, a dark blue button-up blouse and dark blue dress pants. Still, the dress pants complimented her figure well, and you could tell her chest was having a hard time fitting beneath her blouse. At a guess, she was twenty-six.
You reached the bear, only to find it stuck. It’s arm had become hooked on the display. Groaning in frustration, you pulled and yanked on the bear’s other arm, trying to yank the plushie three times your size off of the wall. It was a comical sight…or at least it was until the bear popped free, along with the two other bears above it. An avalanche of bears fell from the wall, right on top of you.
Thankfully, stuffed bears didn’t weigh a ton, and though you were partially squished, you were able to wriggle out from under the pile. Still gripping the fifty dollars, you struggled to stand up, dropping the cash beside you as you caught your breath. Randomly, a light in the store above you flickered out, so you looked up to see what that was about.
It was then that you realized a light hadn’t gone out, but had been blocked. By a shoe.
The employee’s shoe stomped down onto you, crushing your body like an accordion, crumpling you flat. Your face was stretched out into a comical expression of shock, not unlike a cartoon. Pressed into the treads of the girl’s flat, you couldn’t so much as whimper at the sudden twist of fate.
Having heard the commotion, the employee had walked over to investigate why the bears had taken a tumble. Her gaze was locked entirely on the broken hook on the wall, not on the bears themselves. By extension, this explained why she’d missed you on the floor to. She did hear the squishing sound you made though, and looked down at the ground in confusion. All she saw was the bears, her own two feet, and…
“What? Fifty dollars?! Hell yes!” The girl exclaimed with glee. Bending down, she scooped up your fifty-dollar bill hastily, glancing around to make sure no one had seen her. Satisfied, she slid the bill into her back pocket, tucking it in neatly. “Unexpected bonus, but I’ll take it!” The girl said softly, ending with a laugh.
She then adjusted the broken hook and returned the bears to their proper positions, her foot twisting side to side as she worked. This had the unfortunate and painful side effect of grinding you beneath her sole, crushing you flatter and flatter. It was only when she finished that her attention drew back to her feet.
“Now, swear I stepped on something.” The girl said. Lifting up her right foot, she saw it was spotless. Checking her left, her eyes finally locked onto you for the first time. However, by this point, you looked far from human. Frowning in confusion, the girl picked you from her sole, peeling your flattened body free. She set her foot back down and deposited you into her hand.
The girl scrutinized you closely, smirking at your goofy looking stretched face of surprise. To her, you appeared to be a flat disc several inches wide that also looked like a crushed cartoon guy. She traced a finger along your face, and rubbed her thumb against your back. She could also tell that you were a bit squishy and stretchy.
The girl looked around the store, then back at you. “No, seriously, what are you? It’s almost like my own shoe did this to you, what with your weird face.” The girl laughed softly, oblivious to the ironic truth of her observation.
Meanwhile, you did everything in your power to reform as fast as possible, but the going was tough and slow. Each time you made a tiny bit of progress, the employee’s curiously probing finger would reflatten you. You mentally begged her to just sit still and let you reform so you could explain this mess…and also get your fifty dollars back. All you truly accomplished was managing to read the nametag dangling off of her abundant chest: Renee.
“Uh…what’s your i-idea…Miss Smalls?” You meekly inquired.
