With an outrageously perfect smile on her face, Aria stared down at you pondering how she could prank her best friend back. Maddie was quite a bit away still retrieving the ball as Aria's mind went through various possibilities. Just then, a light bulb flipped on in her head.
"I've got it, this stuff feels so weird I'm going to put it in her shoe so she gets all grossed out when she puts it back on! It's simple yet effective!" Still looking at you, her eyebrows lifted as she chuckled slightly, "I don't know why I'm saying this out loud instead of just thinking it, it's not like you can hear me! Sheesh, a one foot tall man? Yeah right like I would believe that for a second." Just then Maddie came back dribbling the ball towards her friend. Aria spun around, hiding you behind her back as she spoke to Maddie.
"Hey Maddie I think you should probably take your shoes off and retie them! Sometimes that helps me feel like my shoes fit better when I do that!" Immediately Maddie seemed slightly suspicious at the suggestion from her usually mischievous friend, but after thinking about it for a moment she responded.
"Not a bad idea, Aria. I guess I will!" Maddie quickly walked over to the bench near the water cooler and Aria, sitting down and unlacing each shoe individually. She slipped them both off, wiggling her toes in her long, black, athletic socks. Aria sat down beside her, pretending to take out her phone and browse some sort of social media, but secretly she was slyly reaching for Maddie's well-worn, right basketball shoe. In a flash she reached in and yanked the insole out of the bottom, grimacing as she felt the moist fabric between her fingers. She nearly gave up on the plan upon having to feel her friend's foot sweat, but there was no turning back now. She brought your body out from behind her back and dropped it immediately into the awaiting sneaker. Face up, your head must been somewhere towards the front as you were staring at mostly darkness, with a slight light beaming in from the opening away from your vision. The atmosphere in there was immediately damp, with a thick fog of sweat practically obscuring your vision. You cried mentally, wishing that for once in your life meeting someone new didn't end up with them causing you torment in one way or another. But in reality you honestly couldn't blame her for not believing you were a person, as bad as that sounds. Nobody else in the history of the world had been fully grown at one foot tall, let alone with a body made of some unidentified malleable material. Interrupting your existential crisis, Aria placed you back down secretly, right as Maddie reached for the shoe that contained you.
Picking you up off the ground, she deftly laced the shoelaces through the eyelets. Then, the moment you feared, Maddie's large foot filled the space in the opening and blocked out any remaining shred of light that flowed into your prison. You felt the heat rocket up even higher than it already was as her foot squeezed into the opening. The ball of her foot made contact with your face, pressing down onto you firmly even before the shoe was on the ground. Immediately though, Maddie tied her shoe up completely, making sure it was extra tight to prevent any possible ankle injuries while playing. This unfortunately meant her foot squeezed into your now insole form more than ever. And once she slammed her foot onto the court below, the torture increased greatly. She took a few steps, squeezing sweat out of her sock and raining down onto your form below. You were in hell in your current situation, meanwhile Maddie was in heaven.
"Woah! Your tip really did help! My shoes feel way better now! Especially this right one for some reason! It feels like it somehow got way more comfortable! Thanks, Aria." Maddie said to her good friend. You couldn't hear a word of this conversation from your shoe prison, but above in the realm of regular people Aria was perplexed. She was hoping that Maddie would take one step on top of your gummy form and be totally grossed out, but somehow it seemed like she was thankful for the prank Aria just pulled! Not knowing how to respond, Aria meekly said, "Uhh, yep, no problem!" Maddie immediately picked the ball back up and dribbled over to the free throw line. Aria stood up and walked over as well, preparing to get the rebounds for her friend as she often did.
Maddie squared up her feet, aimed at the basket, and in one fluid motion swished the free throw. Aria caught the ball out of the bottom of the hoop and passed it back to Maddie as she repeated the motion. Swish yet again. Once more they repeated it, and the outcome was the same. The duo repeated this act 27 more times, each and every time resulting in a perfectly made free throw. The duo of girls began to feel even more and more shocked, Maddie especially. She had always been a good player, but by some stroke of luck she was absolutely on fire at that moment. Meanwhile, every motion drove her feet further and further into the ground beneath her, squelching your body beneath her hefty right foot. A few minutes later as Maddie sunk her 30th free throw in a row, she finally paused to speak.
"Okay, Aria, what is going on right now!? If I shoot like this I'm going to win the free throw competition hands down!" Maddie exclaimed giddily before continuing, "What's causing this?!"
Aria, who admittedly had nearly forgotten about her squishy prank entirely, finally had her memory flood back into her brain upon hearing Maddie's question. She responded, "Oh! I put that gooey little toy into your shoe while you weren't looking as a prank! I thought you would feel it and freak out but you didn't at all! Turns out it made a pretty good insole, huh? And a super lucky one at that!"
Maddie's heart absolutely sunk upon hearing her best friend's words. She had been playing with her future brother in law inside of her shoe for multiple minutes now. Feeling incredible guilt about pressing her entire weight onto his body she immediately shrieked and sat down on the concrete, unlacing her shoe and ripping it off. Reaching in with her hand she found an edge of your body not cemented into the fabric of her shoe and managed to rip you clean out of her sneaker. Now looking at your body, it had been beaten down into nearly the exact shape of her other insole, not to mention turned slightly gray due to the influx of black fuzz from her socks mixing with her own foot sweat.
"Oh my god, Jake, I'm so sorry I had no idea you were in there!" Maddie said to you as your eyes adjusted to the light and saw her panicked face. She continued, "Aria! Jake is literally a person, not a toy! Just give me my old insole back and put him on the bench then wait! He'll turn back into a human shape you'll see!" Aria, now beginning to believe her friend's story due to the genuine panic she saw in her face, obliged, and traded you for her original insole. Maddie immediately placed her old insole back into her shoe and put it back on, taking a moment to sadly realize how much less comfortable her shoe was. Meanwhile, Aria placed you on the bench on the side of the court and sat down next to you, looking at you for a moment before turning back to Maddie. Trying to take her mind off of the torture she had just caused, she picked the basketball back up and lined up at the free throw line once again. Squaring up she shot the ball once more... and bricked it. Running to get the ball herself she tried again, and missed. Repeating the motion time and time again it seemed Maddie had utterly lost her touch, and was now practically incapable of making a shot. Meanwhile, you were slowly but surely reforming, watching Maddie miss repeatedly on the court. Aria's eyes were now locked onto you with her mouth open in shock, watching what looked like an insole slowly transform into a miniature human. A few more minutes passed and you finally unstuck your arms and legs from the rest of your body, as well as pried your mouth open, and you had finally gotten back to normal.
Meanwhile, Maddie had stormed back over to both of you in an annoyed huff. She softened for a moment upon seeing you, saying, "Sorry again, Jake, I'm glad to see you're okay." Focusing her mind back on basketball she continued, "But what the heck happened to me! I was on fire a few minutes ago, now I can't buy a single make! If I shoot like this I'll get dead last in the free throw shooting contest!" Aria seemed to have come to terms with you being a real human finally as she seemed capable of talking once again.
"Well, I mean the only difference is that... you took the toy, err, Jake out of your shoe." Aria said matter of factly. The three of you paused and looked at each other. You had yet to see this side of Maddie but deep in her mind her competitive instincts were slowly overwhelming all other common sense in her brain. You could tell her mind was running quickly as she processed the information Aria had just given her.
What does she decide?
