Tara's alarm went off and she jolted awake. At first she was disappointed to have been woken up from such a lovely dream, only to quickly remember that reality was far better than any dream. The end credits of the season twenty-one finale were rolling, she still had two cans of beer left in the cooler, a bag of potato chips, and her favorite butt toy was right underneath her--
She blinked. Something was wrong. Darlene wasn't as comfy as she'd been when she fell asleep. She wriggled her backside to the left, then to the right. Nothing. The feeling was gone.
"Impossible. He's too weak to escape--"
"Hello, Aunt Tara," a small voice said from her armrest. There he was. Her nephew Jake. His left side still a little flat but other than that he was carefree as he stood on her tray, eating a potato chip the size of his head. "You're just in time for the show."
She followed his finger to the screen and saw it. The opening credits of The Beautiful and the Pouty. He'd done it.
"I won!" you rejoiced internally and it took all your willpower not to look as smug as she had earlier, back when she'd believed you didn't have a chance of beating her. It took twenty-four years to do it, but the look on her face right now almost made all the past abuse worth it. No sooner had you thought that then a dark look crossed your aunt's face. The intensity of it made you flinch. You took an involuntary step back, your confidence shaken, but whatever you thought you saw must've been your imagination because the next thing you knew your aunt was smiling.
"I'll be damned squirt," she laughed. "Maybe you're not as pathetic as I thought you were." You turned beet red. It was ridiculous. It didn't even qualify as a compliment but it was still the nicest thing your aunt had ever said to you. "I think you deserve a break after all that," your aunt said. "Say, we've never shared a beer before, right? I got two left. Whaddaya say we crack them open and celebrate?"
Your aunt grabbed them from the cooler, opened one and put it next to you. You were shocked. Never in your wildest dreams did you ever expect this. The can was essentially a keg to you, so Tara lifted it up a bit, allowing you to drink out of it. You weren't a fan of drinking, but there was no way you were going to pass up an opportunity like this. In something of a blissful state of disbelief, you watched the show with your aunt. Like drinking, soap operas were also something you weren't a fan of, but who cares? You followed her cues for all the big emotional reveals and chugged more and more of your can of beer. It may not have been the smartest move on your part. You'd be a light-weight even at normal size, but at a foot tall and having drank over half a can, you were getting very drunk, very fast. Still, you couldn't help it. You never expected to have a good time with your aunt. What Kimberly did might've been a blessing in disguise. This might be the opportunity you'd been waiting for to finally get your aunt's respect. And if you could win her over, winning over Cassie's family would be a piece of cake!
"You know squirt, you impressed me with how you handled today's challenge. I can't wait to see how you'll pass the next one."
You blinked, your wits especially slow. "The next one?"
"Yeah, we got another one tomorrow remember? You broke your promise and now you need to beat me in challenges before I let you go home. That was the new deal. I mean, you're still going to live up to your word, aren't you? You may be puny, but you still keep your word like a real man. That's what you always say. So you have no problem continuing this game, right? And completing as many challenges as it takes to win back your time?"
In your drunken state you could do nothing but nod slowly. That made sense. It was the entire reason you came here in the first place, after all. You broke a promise and this was how you were going to make it right.
"And it only makes sense that because you were tough enough to beat today's challenge, tomorrow's challenge needs to be even more difficult. Right?"
"Uh, right... Reashonable," you agreed uncertainly
"I'm glad you see it my way squirt," Tara nodded. "You know that's why I've given you such a hard time over the years, right? I've only been trying to help toughen you up. It's a big world out there and you're a small man. You need to be prepared to face anything life throws your way. Especially now that you're gonna be a married man soon. And just think, if you beat tomorrow's challenge, you'll be back with Katie before you know it!"
"Cassie."
"Whatever. Actually... she must be pretty worried about you. After all, I'm sure with everything she's heard about me, she thinks I'm some kind of monster. Why don't I give her a call right now so you can let her know that you're fine and came here of your own freewill?"
At that you nodded vigorously. How could you have been so selfish? You'd only been thinking about yourself all day. How could you leave poor Cassie worrying about you?
You gave Aunt Tara Cassie's phone number and almost immediately your fiancee answered. "Jake, is it you? Where are you? Do you need me to rescue you? Tell me your aunt's address and I'll be there right away!"
"This isn't, Jake honey," Tara said.
"HI HONEY!" you shouted, even though the call was on speaker.
"Jake," Cassie said sharply. "I want you to take the phone and go somewhere private so we can talk."
"No, baby, it's okay," you said. "Anything you can say to me, you can say to Aunt Tara. We got to talking and all those times in the past were misunderstandings. She was doing all that for my own good."
"For your own good?! Jake, you spent the entire time with my family telling us stories about how she abused you for fun and money! How can you call that tough love?! Look, forget it. Tell me your aunt's address and I'll come get you. I don't want to get your mom involved, and my mom refuses to tell me where she mailed you. She says this was your choice, to offer yourself up to... to live in your aunt's butt?! Because of a promise she forced you to make when you were a kid!"
"It was his choice," Aunt Tara said. "I have the note he had your mom write and his signature on it. Are you calling your mom a liar?"
"My mother," Cassie seethed, "thought she was doing what Jake told her was right, but that wasn't her decision to make--"
"You're right, it's his decision," Aunt Tara said before you could get a word out. "Jake knew the consequences and still volunteered to come here to make it up to me. And I, graciously, gave him a way out of our original deal. Whether he comes back to you will also be his decision."
"You... evil... cow..."
"Cassie," you pleaded, "Aunt Tara is right."
"WHAT?!"
You flinched, but kept going. "She gave me a way out of our original promise. I'm going to do it and then I'm going to come back to you."
"Jake," Cassie said, her voice breaking. "You don't know what you're saying."
"Yes I do," you insisted. You hated hearing her sad, and maybe it was the drinking, but she needed to hear you say this because it was in your heart. "I'll never be as tall as other guys. Or as strong. But I can be just honorable as them. I made a promise. I broke it. Now I need to redeem myself. Please. Just respect my decision. Or I'll never be able to respect myself. Will you do this for me?"
"I... I'll do it," she said.
"Thank you, Cassie," you said. "I love you."
"I love you too. Now please, can I speak with your aunt in private?"
"Oh," Aunt Tara said, "is the evil cow allowed to speak now?"
"Just pick up the phone and make sure Jake can't hear us."
"Fine," your aunt snapped. That dark look had appeared in her eyes again and for a second you were worried that everything Tara had told you had been lies. That she did just torture you because she enjoyed it. You tried to reassure yourself Tara was just angry over Cassie's insult, but then she roughly grabbed you, tossed you in the back of her underwear, then smashed her cheeks together. In a nanosecond you were just as flat as you were an hour ago. But it didn't stop there, as your aunt pulled her pants up as tight as they could go and then ground her ass into the chair roughly. True to her word, your aunt had made sure you couldn't hear them.
"We're alone now. What do you want?"
"Jake is a good person. He's the love of my life. His heart is always in the right place. So I want your word that no matter what you'll send him back to me."
Aunt Tara took her sweet time responding, sipping at her beer and burping carelessly. Moment of truth, has everything Aunt Tara's done been out of some twisted form of tough love or does she only view you as a toy that she wants to own and abuse forever?
"Look honey," your aunt finally drawled. "This may be difficult for you to believe but..."
1) "I do care about Jake. And I'll only send him back once I've toughened him up." Aunt Tara tough loves you.
2) "Jake doesn't love you." Aunt Tara only views you as a toy and will sabotage your relationship so she never has to let you go.
She blinked. Something was wrong. Darlene wasn't as comfy as she'd been when she fell asleep. She wriggled her backside to the left, then to the right. Nothing. The feeling was gone.
