Phil tried to follow the lecture but without the book it was hopeless, in just a couple of minutes he was entirely lost already. However, he didn't dare raise his hand again. He had seen the look Ms. Prittey gave him with his last question, he knew she was annoyed, and it reminded him of back at home whenever her mother "argued" with him. From his point of view, seeing someone looming over him and glaring at him with displeasure was simply too scary, so he quickly learned when to shut up and accept the hand he was given. But he still wanted to do well at school, so he stood up and walked to the alternative.
The alternative was a closed book that Ms. Prittey had on the other side of the desk, a walk that only took him a minute and that fortunately for him nobody noticed, the entire class focused on Ms. Prittey and what she was writing on the board. Once he arrived, he realized with a bit of dread how out of his depth he was, he had never opened a normal book before! His mother always provided him with the supplies at adequate enough sizes so he could read and learn things, but his mother wasn't here anymore. Phil felt a spark of confidence lifting the hard cover, it wasn't that heavy! But as he kept lifting it higher and then pushing it so it could fall to the other side he found out the task got progressively harder. The good news was that he only had to push it a bit more than halfway through, and the hard cover landed with a small thud.
Phil tried to ignore the fact that he would have to do a similar effort many times just to reach page 126, taking solace on the fact that moving paper should be a lot easier than moving the cover. But he was wrong. With a single page he found the...
