Powerless to move, almost powerless to breathe, Phil sat under the weight of Valerie's hairbrush for the entire rest of the class. He was just about to start dozing off (and his leg was already fast asleep) when he was jolted into alertness by the dinging of a loud bell and the sudden feeling of rapid acceleration. As if on a roller coaster, Phil was tossed and swung until the hairbrush (finally) tumbled off of him and he grabbed for the zipper of a small (well, huge to him) cosmetics bag.

He heard Ms. Prittey's voice, muffled, through the canvas of the backpack, saying with some alarm, "Where is Phil!?"

"I'm in here," he shouted frantically, but apparently no one heard.

"Oh," Valerie sighed sweetly, "He asked me to carry him to his next class. From the wild vertigo he felt next, Phil could only guess that she then tossed her backpack jauntily over her shoulder and sauntered out of the room.

Valerie finally looked in at him when she got to her next class and whispered, "Phil, I'm gonna keep you in here until school is over, and then we'll go home and have so much fun!"

It was a long day for Phil, crammed in Valerie's bag along with her hairbrush and personal grooming supplies. She gave him a crumb of her banana for lunch, and then she didn't talk to him again, even when she was sitting on the bus. But when she got home, it was an entirely different story!
