All night long, Phil slept fitfully. The stench of feet stuck in his nostrils and visions of toes dancing in his dreams.
Phil was awaken from his slumber by the soothing sound of his mother's voice. "Phil....Phil...time to wake up." The boy groaned as he stretched his sore body, bruised from his punishment the day before.
"My my you're in a bit of bad shape this morning Phillip. Well, this is a new day. I hope the way you started your first day of school is not how you plan to continue it. We have to leave early if I'm going to speak with Ms. Prittey, so get up and get ready."
As his mother left the room, Phil pulled himself out of bed and took care of his morning routine. He ate for the first time in 24 hours and readied himself for school.
-----At school-----
"Mrs. Bermine! I'm glad to see you and Phil again. How did his punishment go yesterday?" Ms. Prittey greeted them.
"It went well, and I think Phil has learned his lesson. Haven't you Phillip?" his mother responded, shooting her son a glance. Phil nodded. Mrs. Bermine then continued, "Actually that is something I wanted to discuss with you. Phil may be mischievous at times, but I have never known him to be a liar. Is there any chance that Kendra may be at fault here?"
Ms. Prittey thought for a moment, then said "I can understand your concern Mrs. Bermine, but I can assure you that I have total control over what my students do. And if Kendra were at fault, or if she were lying to me, I would certainly know it. Unfortunately, the onus here is on Phillip. Its not entirely surprising when you think about it, this is really his first interaction with people outside of his family in anything that can be considered a social environment. It is a process where he must learn what is and is not appropriate behavior."
Mrs. Bermine nodded. "If you are sure I suppose. It does ease some of the guilt from my mind over my actions last night. All the same though, I was wondering if it would be possible to move Phil's desk away from Kendra? I think we would both feel more comfortable."
The instructor agreed. "Of course. We should be guaranteed of having no further incident in that case. If it were Kendra, which I highly doubt, then moving Phil would be the most obvious solution. If it were Phil.....then lets just hope the punishment has done its job. I'll even let Phil choose who's desk he would like to sit at."
