Kendra thought for a moment, feeling an instant connection to Mandy. But she had precious little time with Phil back in school and had literally just been reintroduced.
"I'm sorry kiddo. We have a few years of catching up to do. Maybe next time though, kay?" Kendra says with a smile.
Mandy dejectedly peels Phil's thoroughly flattened body from her foot and puts him on the table before turning to leave.
"Hey Mandy," Kendra calls to her, the young soccer player turns. "I promise if you win and score a goal, you can have a little post match celebration to make up for this. Fair?" she asks with a smile.
Mandy lights up and hugs the older Kendra before sprinting out of the house.
"I like that kid," Kendra says with a smile. "What do you think...hun?" she asks Phil, savoring the final word and letting it hang over his head.
From proper homeschooling, Phil knew much better than to argue or protest. He simply nodded in agreement with a fake smile plastered on his face. His mother and sister beamed proudly.
"Now, you couldn't see the dress, but I do have one more surprise for you Philly," Kendra exclaimed reaching into her bag once more.
This time, she pulled out a pair of clean, but clearly well worn, white cotton socks with very frayed pink pom poms at the end of each. Phil's face went pale as his mind flashed back to the first time he met Kendra in class.
"You do remember!" she squealed in excitement. I saved them all these years just in case we had a chance to reconnect. I can't wait to share them with you again..."
