“Okay,” Mrs. Bemine simply replied, as she again turned to her daughter, and took the sock in her hand. The rim closed again, leaving the little boy blind to the world around him. The sock swung to and fro, and he could hear his mother’s footsteps clacking on the floor. She was walking down the hall. He could also hear the footsteps of his sister, close behind. No one said anything.

The boy heard the sound of a heavy door opening, and the sock lit up around him and became warmer as they walked outside. It was still dirty and smelly from Kendra’s foot, however - he wondered why his mother hadn’t taken him out of it yet.

Mrs. Bemine approached the younger woman in the chair, at the edge of the playground. Girls were playing all around, and Ms. Prittey was keeping an eye on them.

“Excuse me, Miss Prittey?” the boy heard his enormous mom ask.

“Yes?” Ms. Prittey replied, amidst the sounds of playground noise.

“I’m taking my son home early today,” she said, and Phil’s world turned upside down as the sock was turned upside down, and he plummeted down, into his mother’s awaiting palm.

Mrs. Bemine held the sock in one hand, and her son in the other, in front of Ms. Prittey...
