Slippin' and Slidin' into Melissa's Boot

Phil sees that his destination has changed and scrambles to try and stop his momentum. Unfortunately, after the pounding his legs took under Julia, Phil's legs no longer have the strength to stop his slide. His eyes open wide in disbelief and he screams at Melissa as she sees her eyes widen in excitement and a hungry smile form on her lips. After a moment, Melissa and his other classmates are hidden from view as the slide descends into the boot.
The slide stops a few inches away from the sole of the boot and Phil feels himself drop to the boot's spongy surface. He scrambles to his feet and grasps at the slide but sees it slowly pulled out of the boot. Phil hollers at the top of his lungs for Melissa, and his calls are answered as she sees her smiling face move into view from mouth of the boot high above him. He feels his jail being lifted and sees Melissa's face draw closer.
Before he could form a question, Melissa taunted the tiny student from above. "Well Phil, it looks like you lose. Your feet have to hit the floor and that isn't happening any time soon from inside that boot!" she laughed.
"That isn't fair!" Phil shouted, "You cheated!"
Melissa mockingly looks hurt. "Did I? Phil I told you to expect a surprise at the end, I just didn't tell you what it was."
Phil let that thought sink in for a moment and realized she was right.
"Just like yesterday," Melissa continued, "When you knew what was coming and where the threat was, you dodged without a problem. But if you guess wrong or when something surprises you, you're very easy to stop."
Melissa tilts the boot and Phil falls out into her hand, which she shifts to a slightly loose grip as she continues.
"Your dodging ability and quickness are fine. It's your awareness and reflexes that really need work."
Phil nods his acceptance of what Melissa is telling him, and then looks up with hope. "So, what's next in my training? How do I improve my awareness?"
Melissa laughs and drops Phil back into the boot. "We'll get to that Phil. But remember the terms of the Gauntlet. Since it was ____ boot that stopped you, you get to spend the rest of the day with ____!"
