Phil doesn’t have as much social experience as most kids his age, but having watched people from afar his entire life, he has a pretty good idea of when someone is lying, like Karen is now.
“Really, Karen? Do you honestly expect me to believe that?”
“What are you talking about?” she said, sounding hurt.
“Firstly, you don’t have any way of contacting my mother. Second, there’s no way she’d give me over to a girl a met just hours ago. She’s the literal definition of helicopter parent. So, want to try that again?”
She starts crying, setting him down on a desk and then slumping into a chair with her head in her hands. After a few minutes, Phil starts to feel bad for her.
“I’m sorry I was rude!” he said, “I just get freaked out by going new places. It isn’t like I’d be able to get away easily if I needed to.”
“I’m sorry I lied,” she said, drying her eyes. “I just moved here last month, and I don’t have any friends.”
She grabs a tissue and blows her nose, then turns to you and says, “It’s our free period now. You can spend it with me, or I take take you to your next teacher to wait for class.”
