Princess Ruto was most displeased. She was royalty, had a kingdom, and would one day rule over all the Zora, but she was also a woman that had waited a very long time for her husband. Link was her husband by her people’s traditions and he should be there with her, doing what all Zora husbands were supposed to do. But he wasn’t and Ruto was getting angry. She had accepted that he had to go on that silly quest to stop Ganondorf, but he had accomplished that years ago. Hyrule was safe, princess Zelda was safe, so why hadn’t he come back to be her husband.
Sitting in her room, Ruto looked at it with sad eyes. She’d had a special room built that wasn’t underwater and was especially private just for her to live with her husband. She had decorated it too with blue and green colours, their favourites. There wasn’t much for Ruto to do with her father running the kingdom. She had no responsibilities, no ambitions, nothing other then the desire to see her husband again. It was in that moment of loneliness she decided that she had waited long enough. It was time for Link to fulfill his role as her husband, whether he was ready or not.
Ruto started writing a letter to send to her husband that would lure him back. Ruto may have been a fish, but that didn’t mean she didn’t know how to reel prey in.
Walking quickly towards an above water citadel in the Zora kingdom, the Hero of Time Link’s face remained impassive as he went to meet the Zora princess. He had gotten a letter this morning, warning him of a potential threat to Hyrule that only he could stop. The letter had been vague, but it said to speak to princess Ruto about the danger and to tell no one. Always the hero, Link went right away bringing his shield and sword just incase. He was a simple young man, believing in justice and protecting the innocent. He gave no second thought to coming to see princess Ruto, an old friend from childhood. He just hoped she didn’t bring up that whole marriage thing.
Link noticed that there was no water in Ruto’s home, which was odd for the aquatic race. Pulling out the letter, he read that she wanted to meet him in the top room to discuss something of the greatest importance. Always vigil for danger, he entered Ruto’s room and for the first time in years saw his old friend sitting on her bed. She looked unchanged, same smooth blue skin, same cute face, and same sleek body. From what Link understood, she was quiet a beauty in the eyes of Zora males and sought after by many of them. He also knew from rumours that she refused them all, claiming she already had a husband and some day he would return to her. Link knew she meant him, much to his discontent.
“It is good to see you Hero of Time. We have much to discus, sit beside me,” Ruto said formally and gestured to the empty spot beside her. Link did as he was told silently, secretly grateful that Ruto was all business and not mentioning the marriage. Maybe he could get out of here without her asking him when he was going to settle down with her. Once he was seated next to her, he noticed she had a bowl cradled in her hands that blue liquid sloshed around in. He gave no second thought to the strange liquid, focusing on whatever danger was at hand and what Ruto had to tell him. He stared at her in her center eyes, unflinching as he waited for her to explain.
“Before I tell you the danger, you must drink this special potion. It is crucial to your destiny.” Ruto held out the bowl and Link took it without a second thought. She had said destiny and Link knew never to question that. He lifted the bowl up and took a gulp. The liquid tasted foul, but he had tasted far worse on his travels. The liquid went down smoothly and he drank every drop. Handing it back to Ruto, the princess remained serious a second more before grinning merrily. She explained with a giggle, “The great danger is me spending another day without my husband.”
Link grumbled, saying nothing else as usual, as it sank in that he had been tricked into coming. Never one to talk things over, Link started to rise, but tumbled to the ground. His body had suddenly gone numb all over. Lying on his back, he stared up at the ceiling and cursed inside his head for drinking that potion without asking any questions. Ruto stared at her husband lying on the floor and slowly rose to her feet. Walking around him, she admired her paralyzed hero and gleefully anticipated what was going to happen next to him. “You might be cute and brave, but you can sure be dumb too husband.” She told him lightly, kneeling down at his side to take away his weapons.
Link watched helplessly as he was disarmed. It was humiliating for the great hero to be defeated so easily and he would have some strong words with Ruto once he got control of his body back. She tossed his sword and shield away like they were worthless, she was much more interested in her real prize. Link stared back at her angrily, but it bothered her none. Soon, petty things like anger and independence would be unimportant to the Hero of Time. He would belong to her forever and there was nothing he could do. She could see it had started.
Ruto’s face seemed to be getting further and further away from Link by the second, which made no sense because they weren’t moving. Feeling his clothes getting larger and his feet start to come out of his boots, he realized what was happening. Somehow he was shrinking. Ruto got further away, her body growing larger as her face disappeared seemingly hundreds of feet above Link. His clothes draped over him like a blanket, as he became only a few feet tall. Ruto kept smiling warmly, reaching down for Link’s cap as it became too big to fit him.
“Poor hero, I wouldn’t have to do this if you had just acted like a Zora and not run off. Now you’re going to be my pet husband. It’s so sad,” Ruto said, not sound upset at all about what she was doing to him. Link’s shirt became too big for him and he disappeared into it, saving him from looking at the happy face of the Zora responsible for doing this to him. He wasn’t a foot tall by now and his shirt was getting heavier. Link wondered when this would end as he became smaller then a doll.
