This is good, right? Cheating Death chapter 16 by copier · original author: fearboy

Staring up at your mother for the first time since being placed under her toenail is hard with your vision still hazy after your time in the dark. As your vision gets better, you notice that she’s wearing a tight black dress. You clearly remember her dressed differently the last time you saw her so that means she changed clothes while you were trapped in your smelly, hot prison. The fact that your mom had undressed while you were with her wasn’t as disturbing as the fact that you were completely clueless about it. What else did your mom do while you were her toenail prisoner?

“Hi mom, how’s it going?” You nervously ask. Any seconds now you expect her hand to come down on you, reducing you to a splattered mess against her palm. You stare up at her face, able to see her clearly as your vision returns. She doesn’t look angry, but she doesn’t look happy either. Her face is blank as she looks down at you. It’s like she’s ignoring your existence, which is good. You would rather be forgot by your mother, then the recipient of her rage.

“How am I doing? Well, my dates over,” Your mom drawled as her eyes shift down to you. Under her gaze, you feel like a speck, which is appropriate considering your size. At the first sign of danger you get ready to run, where you are going to run you have no clue. You wait for your mom to start sneering, but instead you see a smile form on her face. “And it went great! I think I found the man of my dreams. It was romantic and fun and we really connected. I haven’t enjoy myself like this in years.”

Your mom starts laughing and you join her, only you’re laughing in relief. Things went great and you get to live for another day. The chances of your mom having a good date have always been slim with her attitude and the baggage of having three kids, but she beat the odds tonight and nothing went bad. You almost collapse withy relief, happy that you’re not going to find out what atoms look like up close. Your nightmare of an evening is over, everything worked out fine.

No longer afraid of your mom, for the moment, you sit down in front of her and try to learn more. If this new guy made her happy then you wanted her to keep seeing him. Not only for her happiness, but your continued survival. “I’m glad you had a good date. Did he like the paint job I did on your nails?”

“My nails?” Your mom perplexedly asks, not understanding what you meant. It takes a few seconds for her to remember and her smile increases. “That’s right, you painted my nails. I completely forgot. After I stowed you away, I decided not to wear my sandals. My painted toenails were never shown once during the date.”

“I see,” you stiffly say. You bite your lip to keep from screaming as a burning anger rushes through you. You had toiled on her toes earlier, your body still ached from rushing from one smelly toe to the next, trying to get them ready and your mom just ignores all your work. You’d love to give her a piece of your mind, but you’re not suicidal. You finally have your mom in a non-homicidal mood, screaming at her would only earn you another death today.

Your mom seems to notice your attitude dampening, but remains cheerful. She reaches down towards you and scoops you into her hand. Your tumble into one of the wrinkles in her palm and lie there as she lifts you to her face. She smiles down at you, her little boy all reduced down. She giggles down at you, thinking how you’re just the cutest thing she’s ever seen. “Don’t get sad. So your work was never seen, that’s okay. Just consider it practice. I’m going to get you to do my nails everyday from now on.”

“Thanks,” you sarcastically mutter. Your mom misses the attitude and continues to rock you in her palm. She’s cooing and giggling at you like you’re a baby again. It’s humiliating, but still a step up from her previous state of mind. She can baby you as long as she wants as long as she doesn’t kill you again.

“Oh baby, my date tonight was amazing. None of my dates ever turned out good until I brought you along. I think you might just be my lucky charm. From now on honey, your coming on all my dates. With you along for the ride, I’ll always have a great time. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get lucky myself.”

You retch at the thought of your mom getting ‘lucky’ and become even sicker when you realize that if that happened you’d be along for the ride. Right now, you almost wish her date went bad. If things had gone south she would have been angry and probably killed you, but things would have been over with. Now she wanted to drag you along on all her dates with you being her lucky charm. You could just imagine anytime something goes wrong you’ll be blamed. Hopefully your mom will forget about this whole lucky charm thing, but from that gleam you see in her eyes that seems doubtful.

“Whatever mom, I just want to get some sleep,” you groan and wipe your eyes. Your covered in sweat and toe gunk, but all you can think about is resting somewhere that doesn’t reek of feet. You’ll clean up in the morning, somehow. You’ll have to change a lot of things now that your smaller then a bug, but you’ve managed to adjust to size loss before. You’ll worry about it in the morning after you sleep off the worst evening of your life.

“Can’t go to bed now little guy,” your mother tells you with a sweet smile. You pull your hands away from your eyes and look at her. You’re getting the same bad feeling you got right before your mother went ballistic. Something bad is about to happen, you can feel it in your tiny bones.
