The world lurches upwards as your mother stands. From your vantage point in her palm, the journey to the living room is a dizzying spectacle of motion. The kitchen tiles blur past below, a monochrome landscape streaking by at impossible speeds. You're buffeted by the wind of her movement, a miniature storm generated by her simple stride. The scent of her perfume, a floral and musky mix of jasmine and sandalwood, fills the air around you, thick and cloying in the confined space of her cupped hand.
She settles onto the sofa, the cushions groaning under her weight with a deep, resonant *thump* that vibrates through her entire body and into yours. The world stabilizes. You're now presented with the vast expanse of the living room, a familiar territory seen from a terrifying new perspective. The coffee table is a mesa, the television a glowing cliff face in the distance.
Her hand, your entire world, begins to rise again. This time, the ascent is slower, more deliberate. You travel past the rolling hills of her collarbone, climbing the sheer cliff of her neck. The texture of her skin changes here, smoother and tighter. You pass the dangling silver skull earring, a monolithic monument to her rebellious youth, its hollow eyes seeming to watch your ascent.
Finally, you arrive at your destination: the side of her head. Her ear is a colossal, fleshy cavern before you.
The sheer scale of her ear is overwhelming. It’s not just a hole, but a complex landscape of ridges and valleys. The outer curve, the concha, is a pale, fleshy basin big enough to house a small village. Fine, dark hairs sprout from the entrance, each one like a twisted, ancient tree. The air here is thick and humid, saturated with the waxy, slightly sour scent of her inner ear. It’s a smell you’ve become intimately familiar with, a potent cocktail of her natural body chemistry and the faint remnants of yesterday’s shampoo.
Her thumb and forefinger gently nudge you closer, guiding you toward the echoing darkness of the ear canal itself. The heat radiating from within is palpable, a stark contrast to the cooler air of the living room. You can feel the vibrations of her voice even before she speaks, a deep rumble that travels through the cartilage and into the soles of your tiny feet.
Her voice, normally a pleasant hum, is now a deafening, soul-shaking boom that reverberates through the fleshy chamber you stand in. Each word is a seismic event, a pressure wave that threatens to knock you off your feet.
"I KNOW IT'S BEEN HARD, SWEETHEART," she begins, the sound causing the fine hairs around you to dance wildly. "I CAN'T HEAR YOUR LITTLE VOICE ANYMORE. NOT LIKE I USED TO. AND I MISS IT. I MISS TALKING TO YOU."
She pauses, and the silence is almost as unnerving as the noise. The slow, rhythmic thumping of her pulse becomes apparent, a steady, bass-heavy drumbeat echoing from the depths of her head. The warm, moist air carries the scent of her, an intimate and overpowering mixture of wax, skin, and a faint trace of her jasmine perfume.
"I WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND. ARE YOU HAPPY? DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT... BEFORE? MOMMY WORRIES. JUST TELL ME ANYTHING! ANYTHING AT ALL!!"
Her question hangs in the humid air. How do you even begin to answer?
