Evie drove through the rich neighborhood with a bit of awe but also with a sense of unease that she couldn't shake off, why would someone who lived here require her services? wouldn't they have like an army of maids ready to clean everything? Whatever, she needed the money and business wasn't going well this month.
The reason business wasn't going well was because as usual, the little clientele she managed to get recently just got over the novelty of her services, and as proud as she was of the complex work behind the driven vacuum cleaner the truth was she was competing with household appliances that just were getting more and more affordable. She tried to not think much about it though, remaining optimistic because she knew the alternative ways for tinies to earn money were all unappealing to her at varying levels, some required skills she sucked at, and some were outright demeaning to say the least.
"The houses all look so fancy, I wonder if any of them got shrunk and suddenly became unable to enjoy all their money" Evie thought, recalling her happy and simple life as a construction trainee and the way everything changed the moment the Spontaneous Shrinking Phenomenon hit, even if she didn't have any lofty goals in life other than be able to work and save a bit of money. She was lucky enough and got support to get her idea going, but she wondered if those mean rich people would still be living an easy life or if they would eventually get their comeuppance in a world that could now look down at them regardless of what they owned.
Evie sighed when she arrived at her destination, the imposing doors reminding her that she didn't have an opportunity to talk with this customer because of how rushed the whole process was. When she wasn't getting any calls she just mass applied to online ads searching for domestic cleaning services, explaining the details later with those that replied back. On this one though she was simply told when and where to show up, and how her tasks would be explained once she arrived. With no other offers coming in she just had to accept it, specially considering the pay would be enough to cover her expenses.
"Well, now what?" Evie thought, seeing the doorbell far above her, impossible to reach with her reliable vehicle. And if there wasn't a ramp she wouldn't even be able to make it past the stairs! Evie sighed and softly bumped the door with the cleaner, realizing her uneasiness was coming from having to explain her customer about her services face to face instead of online. She knew she had to work on that a lot as a freelancer, she knew that it was a skill to improve upon that could help her retain some of the customers that hired her in the past, but she still struggled a lot with it, specially because there was always this feeling that she wasn't being taken seriously once she stepped out of the cleaner.
Evie bumped the door softly again, checking the mail again to make sure she should ask for Ms. Jennifer Copeland and trying to rehearse a little speech that could give her a little confidence while visualizing the best possible scenario, being given a chance to prove her worth.
