You stay stationary, accepting your new role as a grape. Before you can even process the announcement, the world lurches again. The owner's grip tightens slightly as she strides back down the hallway, the rhythmic pounding of her footsteps echoing like war drums in your ears. You're carried past the room with the foot-shaped indentation and towards the doorway you'd only glimpsed before.
The door swings open, revealing the source of the coppery-sweet smell. It's a storeroom, but instead of shelves lined with liquor, there are rows upon rows of large glass jars, each one glowing with a dim, internal light. They're terrariums, and they are packed with squirming, naked, miniature men. Hundreds of them, all about your size, are crammed into each container. Some are huddled in corners, trembling. Others pace frantically, their faces masks of desperation. A few seem to have accepted their fate, staring blankly at the glass walls of their prison. The air is thick with the combined musk of their sweat, fear, and the metallic tang of dried blood from those who weren't careful in their confinement.
The owner hums a cheerful tune as she approaches one of the less crowded jars. With a flick of her wrist, she unscrews the metal lid. The pop of the seal is deafening up close. She tilts her hand, and you tumble unceremoniously into the jar, landing on a pile of other shrunken men.
You land in a heap of limbs and panicked bodies, the impact knocking the wind out of you. But your training—or perhaps sheer adrenaline—kicks in. With a grunt of effort, you untangle yourself from the other men, pushing off a flailing arm and scrambling to your feet. You manage to find your footing on the shifting, fleshy ground beneath you without being immediately trampled by the terrified crowd.
You're in a sea of humanity, reduced to vermin. The men around you are a pathetic sight. Some are openly weeping, others are screaming obscenities at the giantess who looms over the jar like a goddess of destruction. The owner peers down at you all, her face a massive, distorted oval through the curved glass. She gives the jar a little shake, sending everyone tumbling into a chaotic pile once more.
"Settle in, little grapes," her voice booms, muffled but still terrifyingly loud. "The main event starts in a few hours. Try not to bruise each other too much before the guests arrive." She winks, a slow, deliberate motion that feels like a solar eclipse. "Especially you.. I've told your family to save their best dance moves for you."
With that chilling promise hanging in the air, she screws the lid back on. The final, resounding *CLANG*
