Alas, the decision was not up to Yvette anymore. The mighty hoof that was coming down was simply too big and too fast to avoid. It would all come down to fate.

*crunch*

She only felt it for a second. That unimaginable, sudden weight that annihilated her body in an instant felt like she had been crushed by a piece of the heavens. It was too much for a mortal mind to handle, and so the body had numbed itself as an act of mercy. Or perhaps it had become too broken to process anything anymore. It didn't matter.

Yvette's entire world had gone dark and stagnant, but she had yet to perish. Her cognitive mind had all but vanished, but she could intuit the difference. The feeling of approaching death was unmistakable, and the heavenly host had yet to give her the warm welcome that she had earned. The guard had stopped moving as soon as she had committed her act of regicide. It fanned a spark of rage that lit up the last vestiges of Yvette's mind.

"She knows!"

In her final fleeting thoughts, the princess cursed this lowly guard.

May she face justice for what she had done.
May she be haunted for the rest of her short life.
May my ruined beauty be forever burned upon her mind.

"Hm?"

The minotaur guard stopped. She felt something squish under her hoof, something small. She judged it to be something similar to the one time she had accidentally stepped on a cockroach, only less crunchy and more... wet.

"Oh gods, is that a mouse?"

Iidas let out a long, slow sigh as she scraped the hoof against the cobblestone. She ultimately had no interest on whatever it was, or had been, just that the thing wouldn't squelch under her every step. Dealing with it would be someone else's problem. Maybe some critter or pest that lived in the walls would get a decent meal out of it.

*grooooowl*

The guard's stomach echoed in the empty hallways, making its owner quick to return to her patrol to brush off her embarrassment. She cursed herself under her breath for getting distracted by some idle thoughts like this. Ignoring her basic needs, hunger most of all, during a shift took a lot of willpower.

"There should still be some stew in the break room..."

And as Iidas' light retreated with its owner, whose mind had already moved on to planning out the end of her current shift, a curtain of darkness fell upon the final moments of the smear formerly known as Her Highness Princess Yvetta di Rancelle.
