Like a doting pet, Jack hurries into the living room after Zoe. By the time he makes it across the hall and into the room, she’s already sitting on the couch. He drinks in the magnificent view of her simply existing; a giant goddess reclining atop impossibly large architecture. There sat the centre of his universe. People spend their whole lives trying to figure out their purpose, and Jack had discovered his already; Her. He fell to his knees, humbled by her presence. Then her phone started to ring.
The jingle startled Jack, and he quickly hopped up on his feet to hide behind the leg of the coffee table. He wondered if it was Lydia, calling to inform her that he’d escaped the box. Could this all be about to end before it had even begun?
“Hey you!” Zoe’s voice sang down the phone. Jack knew instantly who she was talking to; the raised inflection, the singsong voice, the way her smile was audible through her words. It was how she used to answer the phone to him. She was talking to her boyfriend.
Jack’s mood darkened as he listened to Zoe’s half of the conversation. He dug his nails into the wood of the table leg as he pictured the idiot on the other side of the phone, talking to Zoe like it was his right, like he earned her affection.
“…well, it’s been a… weird morning. Jack came over…”
Jack’s ears perked up. She was talking about him!
“…yeah, I wasn’t going to tell you, but…he was here. He told me he still loved me and all that, blah blah blah… obviously, I told him no! …I told him about us. …I know, I just felt like I had to…” whatever Zoe’s boyfriend was saying on the other side was starting to make her blush. “…maybe you’ll find out how serious we are tonight…” she giggled playfully. Oh god, she was flirting with him!
Jack wanted to walk away. He didn’t want to hear this! But, where would he go? She was his whole world now. He settled for covering his ears and watching her blush, giggle and smile, and pretended these actions were all for him.
