Ginny already knew who was going to be the test subject for this, she just needed to talk with her. She was her best friend, her partner in crime, her sidekick on the less serious things, things that didn't involve dealing with he who must not be named. Her best friend Anna Paley.

Anna was also a Griffindor and had the same age as Ginny, a tall skinny girl with long black hair and brown eyes that had an unassuming look and mostly kept to herself. Anna's reserved nature was due to her upbringing as a muggle and the shock she was having back then adjusting to both the magical world and the fact that she was a witch. She somehow made it into the Gryffindor house though, and struck a friendship with the also timid Ginny who seemed sincerely interested in her life as a muggle for reasons Anna couldn't understand at first (later she realized it was to understand her brother's friend a bit better). But she came to appreciate the company and the pair quickly bonded, supporting each other in studies and hanging out a lot during most of the first year.

Anna was disappointed that at some point Ginny started to drift apart and became more reclusive than usual, even pushing away her own family and looking sickly and distressed all the time. Anna worried about her friend but like Ginny's brothers, she was unable to reach out to her, and with nobody she could ask for help on the matter she gave up. It wasn't until the end of the year that Anna could see the extent of Ginny's problem and felt guilty for not telling anyone about that damn diary she was using, but when Ginny recovered both girls quickly apologized to each other and their friendship was restored.

On the second year, after another scary episode with a dementor Ginny started to blossom and become more confident and more capable as a witch, while Anna started to struggle with the material but thanks to her loyal friend managed to get by. At first Ginny wanted Anna to put in the effort to become as good as Hermione Granger, but it became clear that she didn't have the natural talent, genius and drive the prodigious muggle witch had so Anna was still finding her place in the magic world. Ginny supported Anna in the classes and homework, and Anna tried to support her in kind on anything she could, on anything Ginny shared with her. She gave Ginny some advice about Ginny's crush on the famous Harry Potter who happened to be friends with Ginny's brother, and even if Anna sometimes felt Ginny was holding secrets from her, she was reassured when Ginny told her a friend like her was something she needed.

On the third year both girls changed, with Ginny becoming more beautiful, more assertive and charismatic to the point she was now a popular girl and even had a date to the Yule Ball with one of the senior students! Although Ginny claimed she still liked Harry and how this Neville guy was "just a friend". As for Anna, she was still an outsider, growing disenchanted with the magical world and wondering if she would ever fit in. The only thing that made her keep going was actually Ginny, and how watching her grow from a timid girl to a popular student didn't foster any resentment on her but in fact it did the entire opposite, Anna started to admire her more to the point she wasn't sure if it was actually a crush. Even if they didn't talk as much now, Anna went out of her way to be with Ginny and help her in any way she still could, wondering if there was any chance whatsoever and hoping for a small opportunity. Even if she knew the young witch still had feelings for Harry Potter, at least those growing desires distracted her from wanting to drop out and go back to the "normal" muggle world that didn't have much going for her either.

- "Hey, can we talk?" Ginny suddenly showed up on Anna's bedroom when she was writing something on her diary, being careless enough to not close the door just to not lose the inspiration of what she was thinking about at the time.

- "Ginny! Sure, what's wrong?" Anna was surprised, it's been a while since Ginny showed up like that

- "Nothing's wrong, I just need your help if that's ok" Ginny gave her friend a cute amused smirk that made Anna wonder how strong their friendship really was, maybe Ginny no longer needed her now that she was a popular student, maybe she was just a burden to her now. Nevertheless she nodded.

- "Thanks! I need you to drink this" Ginny handed Anna the potion vial

- "What's this?"

- "Won't tell, it's a surprise"

- "What? is it dangerous?" Despite her willingness to help Anna's cautious nature still took over

- "It's not, I swear. But I need to see if it works."

- "Then why don't you tell me what it does? I want to be prepared you know-" Anna tried to argue her case but got interrupted

- "Come onnn! Pleeease, I will owe you a big one for this" Ginny pleaded in a way that surprised Anna, and that reminded her of the good times

- "A big one? is it that important?" Anna asked with some hope, would Ginny finally let her in on all those things she knew affected her deeply but she barely knew a thing about?

- "Hmm, it is for me. And it's the kind of thing I could only ask you" Ginny said feeling a bit flustered, which just sealed the deal for Anna

- "Okay then" She nodded and smiled back at Ginny's happy grin before drinking the "surprise" potion
